    Location of Sleepers in Consist

Allow me to throw some gasoline on this fire! As I recall from the 60's, the NYC almost always placed their sleepers on the rear of a train and the PRR almost always placed theirs in the front. When I worked at Amtrak in DC for a short time in the early 70's, there were several ex-PRR types...

    BNSF Engine Leading Amtrak #6(06)

I am on this train in the second sleeper and noticed you filming as we went by!  According to what I heard on my scanner, the lead unit had problems with traction motors on the first and third axles.  The engine crew tried to cut them out near Ft. Morgan but it didn’t work.

    Current Amtrak Business Class Offerings

Maybe not as often as you, but I also do business class on the Wolverines. I, too, appreciate the quietness of Business Class, but my past two trips may tip the scales in favor of choosing coach in the future. The positive is that attendants have been uniformly wonderful, with plentiful and...

Amtrak store at CUS is open again?

After a change of trains today at CHI, my guess is that the above is correct. The store is opposite the old ticket counters, and was closed today during the lunchtime hours. Looks like a few wearables, and some other items at the counter are available. There is a sign which notes "All sales...

    Lounge Attendant on the Zephyr

In fact, he did! Infamous was the key word!

    Lounge Attendant on the Zephyr

Had an attendant on #6 the Zephyr from 2/15, he had much the same patter, and I believe I heard his name as "Rod Pasco". But it looks like there are enough similarities with other that it may be a common thing.

    The Other Moffat Tunnel

Me as well when I go thru on Friday!

    Revised Wolverine schedule starting 1/22/18

Speaking of Albion, do all Amtrak trains still have to go thru that city at a very slow speed in order to comply with a City Ordinance? If so, hopefully someday maybe negotiations can raise that city imposed speed limit to something faster and more reasonable that works for everyone.

Books about Amtrak and Rail Travel

Read Nothing Like It in the World by Stephen E. Ambrose. It's another book about the building of the Transcontinental Railroad, and like other Ambrose books, it is accurate and readable. My personal opinion: It is much more factual and interesting than Dee Brown's book on the same subject.

    Let's go to Philly!

Really enjoyed your trip review! While employed at the Penn Central, I lived on 19th Street between Chestnut and Rittenhouse Square as well as on Pine Street near 10th. Haven't been back to Philly since then, but nevertheless, reading your review was almost like being there again!

I may be crazy, but I'm going to take 3 trains across country

Agree with Maglev, and a roomette can be quieter, too. The partition that can be retracted and allow two bedrooms to be opened together can vibrate and be noisy. I've heard others describe a roomette as a "cocoon", and I think that is pretty close. I did ride the Cap and the SW Chief for...

    Suggestions for Michigan Trip

I concur with SarahZ and say that getting a car is a wise idea, but for a different reason. What I am going to recommend in Michigan is some of the amazing scenery and places along the Lake Michigan shoreline north of Holland. Unfortunately, the days that passenger trains could take you to...

    Zephyr in Winter

Interesting! I am in 631 in mid February and in 532 toward the end of February!

    Zephyr in Winter

FYI if anyone is still interested, #6 had three (!) sleepers on the rear today as it pulled into Grand Junction.

Eric & Pat's October Trip Report: San Diego-Toledo-San Diego

Thanks for a great trip report, made all the better with the Tony Hillerman reference. It is easy to imagine Joe Leaphorn or Jim Chee checking out one of those box canyons that you can see while riding the SW Chief thru NM and AZ!

CZ End of Winter Consist Date

Amtrak did exactly that for my Brother-in-Law. He had purchased a ticket from Grand Junction to Chicago before the UPRR decided to reroute thru Wyoming. He and about twenty others left the Grand Junction Depot at the scheduled departure time for #6. The bus arrived in Denver, where he boarded...

Amtrak's Southwest Chief to Albuquerque for the International Ball

Loved the shots of the Valle Grande! Haven't been there in years.

    Roomette or bedroom?

Maglev makes some points that came to me, too. I would add that the moveable partitions in most bedrooms can mean more noise than a roomette, unless you have adequate scraps of cloth to stuff in the jambs. On the other hand, I enjoy stretching out on the couch in the bedroom for a nap. But...
