    Midwest flooding

If Amtrak used the same charter company since the 10th or whenever the detour/busing for connecting passengers started, then they should be able to find their way, but I guess I was a little harsh on them...the only thing that should have been handled much better was the baggage situation. I'm...

Business Class on NE Regional Train

Actually most Regionals do use an Amfleet I car with Amfleet II-style seating--the extra legroom and larger seats etc. However, as others have said, sometimes a regular Amfleet I coach substitutes, while sometimes one of the "coaches" is actually a business class car.

    Midwest flooding

I just got home from a trip on the Empire Builder and arrived into Chicago yesterday (June 13th). The day before, I had heard the crew talking about a detour, and our attendant later confirmed that the train would be detouring east of MSP, as previously described here, with busses for...

Walking from Greyhound to Train Station in Chicago

I would be careful walking from CUS away from downtown--as you walk west or south, the areas can become questionable, and though I've never been there, I've read that the Greyhound station isn't in the greatest area. However, it should probably be fine during the day.

Rest Stops on Various Amtrak Routes

For the Capitol Limited: Toledo (4 minutes) Pittsburgh (15 minutes) Cumberland (7-10 minutes) Cumberland is sometimes a double spot, so you'll have to detrain from the sleepers, wait until the train pulls forward, and then reboard through the coaches. The schedule gives 9 minutes for the...

Upgrades to one, down grades to the rest?

The Texas Eagle runs with one P42, a transition sleeper, a sleeper, a CCC (formerly a diner), a lounge, and three coaches (four St. Louis-CHI), so it shouldn't require an extra engine just to add an extra car, unless there are steep grades or the like on the CONO.

    Empire Builder questions

I have a few questions about an upcoming trip on the EB...hopefully these haven't been asked before. 1) How early does boarding start in Seattle, and how early do they bring the train into the station? 2) Do I need to check in as with the Cascades, or can i just wander out to the train once...

Getting from CHI Union Station to Midway

Just a warning: if you have a lot of luggage, the Quincy/Wells station can be difficult to navigate--it is a historic station still in much of its original form, and you must climb several narrow stairways to reach the El platforms. AFAIK, there are no elevators.

    NEC capacity

IIRC Trenton also has one low level platform on track 3, the easternmost track, which is usually used for NJT storage.

    Consist?

Actually, at least according to Trains magazine, the sleepers were moved to the back on the Coast Starlight and Southwest Chief, in addition to the CZ. However, as with the CZ it appears that the sleepers are back on the front end of the SWC and CS, at least until the summer.

Good Train Viewing near Chicago Union Station

Though my experience with Chiago is somewhat limited, I would definitely advise you to be careful when railfanning much farther south than Roosevelt Road--while Roosevelt Road is busy and is safe with many pedestrians around all day long, if you go farther south towards the end of the Amtrak...

    Dining

I've been a member here for over a year, and compared to last January, there are almost three times as many active topics per day--when I log on, I used to find maybe half a page of unread threads, but now I find over 1.5 pages!

NJT rail line from NYC to Atlantic City

But Amtrak is still running 10+ P-32BWH locomotives which were built somewhere around 1990 IIRC. These are older than the P40s, and are less suited to passenger service being modified freight locomotives. Yet, while the P40s gather dust in the Bear shops, these older locomotives continue to...

    Question about late arriving trains....

This page on the USA Passenger rail guide website has a few pictures of the station, probably enough to give you a general idea of what to expect

    AMTK 39973

Here is a recent Youtube video of a Pacific Parlour car in Chicago, probably the one being discussed here.

    Amfleet I/Horizon seating arrangement

A recent topic made me wonder about how crews deal with turning the seats on trains such as the Keystone/Hiawatha which frequently change direction. Do they have half of the seats permanently facing one way and half the other way in some of the Amfleet Is/Horizons? Or do they turn them in the...

    Texas Eagle/Sunset Limited

Just to clarify, I was talking about the Texas Eagle, pre merge.

    Texas Eagle/Sunset Limited

I believe that the consist is as follows: P42 Transition Sleeper-2132 Sleeper-2130* Diner Lounge Coach-2110 Coach-2111 Coach-2115* Coach** *These two cars are the through cars to the Sunset Limited **This coach is removed/added in St. Louis for the run to Chicago I'm not positive...

    Newbie To Rail Travel

I definitely wouldn't go with a family room. I'm not sure of the exact dimensions of the two smaller bunks but they probably wouldn't be long enough for a 10 year old, much less a 13 year old.

    tri-rail storage

According to their website, Tri Rail has a yard in Hialeah (Miami) and a small layover yard in West Palm Beach. Looking at Virtual Earth, the Hialeah yard is immediately north of the Amtrak platforms. and is visible from them; however, access to the platforms is only for passengers at boarding...
