Yup, the only thing you can consistently count on with Amtrak is it's inconsistency.

Excellent report with a great collection of photos. Haven't done New Orleans since the late 90's, I hope to get there this year. The hotel looked terrific.

If I was sleeping car passenger on that train and I liked crabcakes, I'd be more then a little pissed that instead of being able to get the $39 s&t I was forced to order the $25 steak or one of the other cheaper options. It's not as if there are a lot of options on the Amtrak dinner menu...

Thanks, I should have made that clearer in post that I was talking membership fees and not the discount.

They stopped that a couple of years ago. However, you can join the Rail Passengers Assoc. to get a discount. $40 for an individual, $20 for a student. https://www.railpassengers.org/all-aboard/join/
