Loss of Checked Baggage Services likely with Airo introduction

I just realized that in the next couple years, the only services offering checked baggage service northeast of WAS will be the Crescent, Silver Services, and the thrice weekly Cardinal. The Carolinian, Palmetto, and Pennsylvanian will all be replaced with Airo sets, meaning they will lose their...

Transit, Urbanism and Real Estate development supporting Transit

Acelas have not served NLC since 2020. I wonder what the ridership was; Shore Line East commuter rail service will be cut in September, so it'll be interesting to see how they choose to make the schedule even worse than it is currently.

State of Amtrak NEC/commuter rail window cleanliness

I've been noticing that it's really a luck of the draw to have a clean window on Amtrak. I'm specifically talking about the NEC, but I know this has been an issue on LD trains for quite some time. Northeast Regional and even Acela windows can be very grungy, to the point you can't really see...

    The virtues of Acela

I would contrast this with the fact that the Acela has much bigger windows with curtains and seats which are closer to the (flatter) edges of the car, making for a better view of the scenery. Doesn't go much faster in the scenic areas anyway.

    6/1/2022 Fare Increase

From looking at NEC coach fares, each bucket seems to have risen by about 10%. Some Acela fares are actually cheaper than the last fare change, ex. NHV-BOS is $55 when it used to be $65. I will report back if I find anything more of substance.

Greenwood, MS (GWD) Accessbility & Amenity Improvements

I've been pessimistic and sad about the current and future states of Amtrak & public transit in general in the US, so when I came across this small bit of good news, I thought I'd share! Accessibility and waiting room improvements have been completed at Greenwood, Mississippi (GWD), including...

    Rail Passenger Association unmet expectations

Yes, it is. Hmmmm wonder where RPA is on this one...probably won't do anything about it 🤬

Michigan City, Indiana station closing 4/4/2022

Caught this Amtrak Alert on the website today; unsure when it was posted. The station saw 2,662 riders in FY2019, with three Wolverine trips westbound and two trips eastbound. The Blue Water route passes through without stopping. That makes about 7-8 people per day, so it makes sense to save...

    Please explain this pricing HFD/NHV-PHL

So Amtrak has been doing this thing on the NEC where it prices tickets on Fridays and Sundays higher than on any other day by excluding Saver fares, no matter how far in advance or how full the train is. It's very frustrating because these fares are usually more than double the fares on other...

    Valentine's Sale

Two weeks after the start of the last NEC sale, Amtrak has a great network-wide buy one, get one sale February 9-16 for travel March 1-August 31! Some fares are really quite good, and though it requires two people, some fares per person are as good or even better than last year's 50% off max of...

    Downeaster 20th Anniversary Sale: $10 one-way BON-BRK inclusive

Surprised this hasn't been posted yet! Great sale for Amtrak's Downeaster, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. The sale is for $20 round-trips anywhere from Boston North (BON) to Brunswick, ME (BRK) January and February with 3-day minimum purchase, but I've found using the code...

    Service Disruption Fare Protection

While trying to find rules on multi-ride tickets in Amtrak's Terms and Conditions, I found this Service Disruption Fare Protection clause: Can someone translate this for me? Say one is traveling from Washington to New York booked on a Regional that starts in Virginia and CSX puts it in the hole...

Amtrak #5(20) nearly 15 hours late

Amtrak California Zephyr westbound #5 left Chicago 1/20 @10:57 PM, 8:57 late, and is currently not even in Nebraska yet, running nearly 15 hours late! What gives? Amtrak's twitter says mechanical issues, but 15 hours is ridiculous! Previous day's 5 was about 4:25 late arriving Chicago.

    NYC to Wake Forest

I am starting to plan the possibility of visiting someone who attends Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC, which has an Amtrak Thruway connection to the High Point station, where the Carolinian would be the best choice to travel to and from NYC. The Thruway service appears to be run by...

Person Electrocuted at MNRR Bridgeport, CT Substation 10/4/21

I was on westbound New Haven Line train #1561 which was running a few late at Milford and never moved once it stopped at about 12:37pm. We waited there about an hour and then it offloaded and turned so it could originate in New Haven. About 15ish minutes later, two westbound Acelas and I think...

    Hurricane Henri 8/22/21

Storm surges expected to be 3-5 feet, on top of possibly two high tide cycles due to tonight's Harvest Moon. Rain up to 8 or 10 inches in some places. If your area is prone to flooding, it's the last minute to prepare. Amtrak has not announced anything as of yet, but CTtransit will stop all...

    Keystone Service Frequency

The last timetable for the Keystone Service had 13 westbound (NYP-HAR) weekday trips with 4 originating in Philly, plus the Pennsylvanian. Saturdays & Sundays each had 8 trips with 1 terminating in Philly, just with different trains, plus the Pennsylvanian. Eastbound (HAR-NYP) had 12 trips with...

Upper Harlem Line to GCT 6/27/21

I will be going down to NYC with some friends on Sunday, 6/27/21 for the NYC Pride festival. I was originally going to use Brewster station on the Metro-North Harlem Line, but I'm afraid the parking spots will fill up, as parking is free on weekends. I'd rather not use Southeast as I've heard...
