Why and how often are trains run completely backward?

Sunday morning I rode the Northeast Regional from NYC to BAL. It was the 143, leaving NYP at 9:47 AM. As we left the station I was disappointed to see that we were riding backward. At first I thought it was just our car (business) but then they announced that the entire train was backward and...

Thank you for explaining all that. I think I instinctively knew the number refers to the route and time more so than the actual train cars (I assume that's what "consist" means.) But I had not put much thought into it. Then I got confused when I thought someone said that's a Vermonter car...

Of course I would not expect them to use different tracks - no intelligent person would, so that should tip you off that you simply didn't understand what I was musing there. Here it is, since I might not have been very clear: I thought someone said those cafe/business combo cars are found on...

Also in this video at 16:00, a different videographer walks through the cafe into the very short business section. I will quit nerding out at this point, but technically this is still about the NE Regional. As you saw on my screen print, I was clearly sold a NE Regional ticket and I guess...

The Vermonter reference was so correct. I just saw this video on YouTube in which someone shared his Vermonter journey. Around the 3:42 mark (and again later in the video) the videographer showed a quick view of the car with the single seats on one side, doubles on the other, curtain, and cafe...

Thanks to both you and Bob Dylan. I'll report back after the trip! (if I remember. It's in September. Nice fares available by booking this far in advance.)

    Northeast Regional discussion

Hi, it's been quite a while. But here I am to ask my like-minded Amtrak fanatics if they've ever seen anything like this. Recently I'm booking a number of upcoming trips (excited to do so), and while checking the seat assignments automatically made on my business class reservations and...

    Amtrak's Online Presence

Bratkinson: Do you mean this January coming up? I thought it was the PREVIOUS January. My trips are for late December, with no assigned seats. I saw the sample on the site showing where the seats would be listed on the ticket, and there's nothing there; the agent also verified that there are...

    Amtrak's Online Presence

I see mentioned above that business class seats are now assigned. I did not know this, and I have tickets for upcoming trips in business class. Is the seat noted on the ticket? I looked and don't see anything. Edit: I called and the agent said she thinks that has not been done "for some...

    Amtrak's Online Presence

Most of the time, the agents on the phone are great and book your trip almost before the words are out of your mouth. I have been very impressed by their friendliness and helpfulness. The website on my browser is clunky and full of bugs, but not QUITE as bad as it was a year ago. The phone...

    Upgrade/Companion/Lounge Coupons: seeking, available, questions

I have a general question about upgrade and companion passes. I used to have many of these and now have none. I haven't been traveling much in the last year, and also I no longer have the BOA Amtrak card (wish I could get another but I cannot.) Is that the only way upgrade and companion...

Will double points be applied if I registered today but traveled two days ago?

He said they will be applied! Apparently if you enroll before the promotion period is over, even trips taken before you enroll are eligible for the double points. Yippee!!!

Will double points be applied if I registered today but traveled two days ago?

Great idea, bratkinson. I call them all the time just to ask the time of day (exaggeration) so I don't know why I didn't think to call and bug them about points. I'll do it and report back the answer. Actually, I'll report back when I actually SEE points applied, LOL.

Will double points be applied if I registered today but traveled two days ago?

Darn it - I did not see that there was a double points promotion going on. I am usually fanatical about registering for any discount I might POSSIBLY use. So I only saw the promotion just now and hit the button to register. Am I out of luck because I bought tickets Saturday and used them on...

Why trains instead of planes for long distance?

If I need to get off the train for some reason, I can do so at the next stop. In fact, everyone can, should there be an emergency. In an extreme emergency, we can get off wherever the train stops (excepting bridges and tunnels and a few other exceptions.) I like being on the ground, in other...

What does your Forum User Name mean?

I haven't been here for a long time (had to reset my password), so I'm saying hi as if just joining now. My name only means that my favorite and most often traveled trip is BAL to NYP and back!

16 Year Old Traveling without Photo ID

Just bring whatever you've got. Sometimes they do check ID. But if they had real questions, they could call your parents, right? That's what I'd ask them to do, if they need more than your student ID or whatever else (birth certificate copy etc.) you can bring along. I've been asked for ID a...

NRG Electric Bonus - 10,000 Points

Wow, right after talking about it, I got all the points, and it was for both gas and electric. Can't complain about this promotion. It's a great one!

NRG Electric Bonus - 10,000 Points

Yes, I see that the online deal is a little different than what people may have received by email. Either way it's a good deal, I think. I found out that in my case, the 2,500 was a bonus for gas, and we get more points later for electric after we've had it for a few months.

NRG Electric Bonus - 10,000 Points

I just looked at this and didn't see 10,000 being offered (but I may have looked in the wrong place.) I saw 5,000 for an electricity account and 2.500 for a gas account. The reason I looked this is up now is that I actually enrolled in it (I admit the spouse did the enrolling so I don't know...
