    Exact routing to Roanoke

Interesting - the improvements in terms of double/triple/quadruple tracking and station upgrades tend to be fairly specific whereas possible route extensions tend to be pretty speculative at this point. Are there possible extensions that could occur in, say, the next 10 years? The gap between...

    CVS station proposal - finally

Yes, the property owners probably want to make a profit on their investment. The review boards handles design and historic preservation issues and can't evict rent-paying tenants from a private property. Gabe Silverman, the late co-owner of the property, is still beloved in Charlottesville for...

    Construction of Roanoke Amtrak Platform

The Roanoke MSA is #160 according to Wikipedia. The Kingsport-Bristol MSA is #162. Adding Johnson City to the CSA increases things, but at that point you might as well add Lynchburg to Roanoke. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Metropolitan_Statistical_Areas

People in Bedford want (restored) Amtrak service, but they haven't been able to convince people that they have the population or attractions - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bedford_station_(Virginia)

    A proposal to restructure Amtrak

This proposal makes perfect. I'd get rid of the CZ as well. Such a system reorganization should have been implemented 40 years ago. Amtrak is public transportation, not a land cruise for retirees or a commuter service for rural residents. No more sleepers, no more dining service.

NRG Electric Bonus - 10,000 Points

Yes, the online blurb is confusing, but the email that they sent to me directly (after completing one of those pesky surveys, on electricity use) said 10,000 points for changing companies and sticking with it for two months. There's also 2,500 points for changing natural gas companies, but we...

NRG Electric Bonus - 10,000 Points

I just switched my electric provider to NRG and am promised 10,000 Guest Reward points after two months. I agreed to take a survey (on electric use), got 250 points, and then got sent an invite. It seems an ok deal - they claim that the introductory price is 30% than Pepco for three months and...

Amtrak ready to allow roll-on bike service between Pittsburgh, D.C

Yes, because long distance trains serve the same purpose and needs as local transit agencies. Umm, what?

NPR story on the Southwest Chief

I thought that the story was reasonable. Long-distance trains are beloved in the abstract especially in the communities that they serve but are also viewed as slow and often late.
