Last call for the BNSF Glorieta & NMRX Semaphores

I remmeber riding the SWC pre-pandemic and watching the blades drop from the rear window. BNSF should auction these off as they're retired - they'd make a fortune!

    Pet Peeves

At PHL, on the other hand, I'm impressed by the latest PA system - four line source arrays nicely integrated into the columns on the north side of the main hall. I think it's something like the fourth system they've had in there since 1990 and this time they finally got it right!

Silver Star/Silver Meteor combined train (Jan - Oct 2022)

Heading north you could change at WAS instead of NYP; due to the engine change and faster NEC train speeds the connection opens up to an hour there. (Of course you miss supper and your sleeper WAS-NYP>)

Train 4 Southwest chef really got hosed by a stalled freight train

About 20 years ago I was on #6 which rolled into CHI at 2AM. (Had to detour over UP just as they were reinstalling the second track through Iowa.) We were met by a full complement of redcaps and ushered to station services for accommodations and alternate travel for those who had missed...

Viewliner II Part 4: Sleeping Car production, delivery, deployment

This drawing is actually not typical of the Amtrak 10-6s I rode. Those had the two-chair bedrooms alternating with the couch bedrooms so they could be combined into a suite. Also, some did have a separate toilet for the roomettes and some had an extended length handicapped roomette instead.

Have you been recognized by Amtrak staff due to frequent travel?

Lo these many moons ago I would ride the Broadway Limited every two weeks to visit my then-fiancée. One Monday morning coming back to Chicago I sat down in the diner and the waiter asked, "The usual?"

Does Anyone Still Have This Blanket?

Yup, it's on my son's bed right now.

Siemens Caltrans/IDOT Venture design, engineering, testing and delivery (2012-2024)

SEPTA also allows bikes despite not having racks. On a Silverliner 4 the bicycle storage area is right behind the "cab", so bicyclists have to wheel their bikes the entire length of the car to the storage area.

    Gravity toilets

Superliner I: I remember listening to my scanner and the maintainers asking to have the "bomb bay doors" closed when the train went through the work zone.

Lake Shore Limited NYP to Chicago

What neroden said. Rob Johnston over at Trains magazine has documented that the sleepers in the reduced tri-weekly consists are selling out well in advance, but that Amtrak has no interest in adding sleepers. This almost by definition makes it impossible for the long distance trains to meet the...

Viewliner II Part 3: Bag/Dorm Car Production, Delivery, Speculation

In this case ("Night Owl") there would be no other sleepers. Same would go for using a bag/dorm as the sole sleeper on 448/449.

An Amtrak route segment no longer in use

They did originally and do now. In between there was a period where they were diesel powered.

An Amtrak route segment no longer in use

Also speaking of the Keystones: before they switched to diesel power most Keystone trains would originate in Suburban Station and use the upper level at 30th Street. (This routing was left over from the Pennsy.)

An Amtrak route segment no longer in use

That would require the North Philadelphia station to become more...um...passenger friendly. Another entry: the Capitol Limited used to run on the Pennsy main Chicago-Pittsburgh.

An Amtrak route segment no longer in use

The Silver Star used to take the Seaboard Air Line Petersburg-Raleigh.

    Restaurants near Chicago Union Station

Is the current Incarnation of Berghoff's any good? I haven't been there in decades.

    Train 30 to 91 connection

I have found the westbound connection in Chicago (LSL/CL/Cardinal to EB/CZ/SWC/TE) to be quite reliable. (It's never failed me, anyway.) Eastbound, not so much - there's less time between arrival and departure (with the exception of the LSL) and the western trains can be VERY late.

    Capitol Limited (30) Dinner

When I rode the eastbound CL back when it had a full diner, the first seating was actually before the train departed CUS. Last summer they didn't start slinging "fresh & contemporary" until we were somewhere past Gary. I have no idea what's going on with the "new & improved fresh & contemporary."

    Silver Star Platform Food

I may be able to take the Silver Star(vation) on a business trip in a month or so. My question for those in the know: have any platform vendors/food trucks taken advantage of the missing diner to hawk their wares? Likely spots would be Richmond, Raleigh, Orlando, Tampa. I'm thinking of an...
