If I have sleeper accommodations....how do I add a passenger for PART of the trip? Since the sleeper price is the same for one or for the total allow passengers....how do I let someone join me? Partly, who I sleep with is my business, but on the other hand, how can I let someone join me mid trip for the perks (meals) allowed in the sleeper? I know the other party must purchase a coach ticket, but is it a simple as just as simple as me escorting them to my room? Or must I talk to Julie....please tell me there is another way.
Thanks all.

The magic phrase is "open sleeper ticket". You have to buy it in person or by phone. You need to get a ticket agent on the phone who's heard of them -- not all the Amtrak ticket agents are properly trained. Your friend gets an "open sleeper ticket" with no assigned room and it's associated with your room.

Note that an open sleeper ticket is a paper value ticket. It has to be picked up at a staffed station, printed at a QuikTrak kiosk or snail mailed.

So I assume this means for the O.P. that if they meet someone on the train and want to invite them to spend the night in their room, they must first telephone Amtrak (from the train, I presume) to purchase an open sleeper ticket, then find a station stop down the line with a long-enough dwell time to go into the station to get a paper ticket from the station agent or QuikTrak machine for the invitee.

The O.P. already seems to have a person and a plan in mind, so an open sleeper ticket is the most appropriate and will ensure that his guest has dining car (or 'sleeper lounge') meals. For an encounter such as you describe, the most appropriate course of action is to seek out the Conductor and advise him of your wishes. Five gets you ten that he simply looks the other way...but that your companion does not get to eat free in the diner.

(What happens in Vegas...)

I did not read it as the OP was inviting a new friend met on the train, but rather an existing friend whom he wanted to join him for part of the trip. Planned in advance.

The open sleeper ticket works how it works.
