The Crescent's schedules have become a shambles, So I figure I'd better get a hotel near WAS or NYP. to overnight before going on to BOS and beyond. The last time I went to BOS, 20 pulled into WAS at 1150 (Sched=0953) and I was booked the 1200 Acela. (I figured a 2-hour window was plenty of cushion...WRONG!) Fortunately my swift thinking SCA called ahead for a Redcap with a cart to meet me at 2010's vestibule. Man, we screamed out to the end of the platform, around the diesel's nose and up to the Acela's Quiet Car vestibule just 5 minutes before she rolled. The was the best $10 tip any Redcap ever earned. At any rate, fool me twice, shame on me.

What reasonably priced overnight accommodations would you guys/gals recommend nearby to either WAS or NYP where this old codger could have a relaxing adult beverage, pleasant evening meal, and comfortable room. The goal being to catch an early-ish morning Acela to BOS/BBY, and thence the "T" to the North Shore. Or to revert to my native tongue, Nawth Showah.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Depending on the date, the Hilton Garden Inn/US Capitol can be reasonably priced. For me, it is walking distance from WAS Union Station (about .6 miles). I have a reservation in November at a very good rate. They have a restaurant and a bar in the hotel.

Near NYP, recently I stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn, Times Square South, which is a fairly new hotel. In June, I got a very good rate. There is an Irish Pub right next door, where breakfast is served. However, looking at the last weekend in September, the rates are through the roof. I usually stay at the Hilton Garden Inn Chelsea, which is about a 1/4 mile from NYP. There is no restaurant in the hotel, but there is a bar that is open on weekdays. The rates the last weekend September are even higher than the other HGI, however, I have paid as little as $79 a night in the past.

Thanks Penny, that'll be helpful for late Oct,/early Nov., or somewhere close.

I have stayed at the Courtyard Marriott which is a short walk from the NOMA U station on the red line. You'd get on at Union Station and go to the next stop. It's a very nice place, cheap, and decent food is around.

$79.? That's an incredible rate for Manhattan....

I like Courtyards, they're my preferred when driving.

I'll second this one. When I stayed there during my last visit to D.C., I got a room facing the tracks. I think I spent most of the afternoon staring out the window.

That is my favorite and I always stay there. The Queen bed rooms face the tracks.

I was thinking the same thing; was that straight from the house or via a consolidator (Priceline, Trivago, etc). I did learn from one motel owner who uses a consolidator to find the property you like on a consolidator site, then call the property directly and mention the price you saw and can they do any better direct. They will often chop a few more bucks off as they do not have to pay the consolidator vigorish.

That $79 rate was very off season and was a few years ago, and was directly from Hilton. I have stayed there in January a few times for around $100 a night. However, the rates for the Gathering weekend are over $400 a night.

In the NY area I usually stay in NJ because I seldom really go to that area to do anything centered on NY City. Having clarified that, I usually stay at the Newark Penn Station Hilton if I don;t have a rental car on the trip, usually for somewhere between $120 and $180 depending on luck. If I have a rental car I usually stay at places like the Farifield Inn in Parsippany for as low as $65 per night. Even with the $55 rental per day it comes out reasonable.

I stayed there a week and a half ago. My criteria for picking it was decent price for WAS area, and direct access to WMATA subway. Quite new appearing, clean and quiet. Last year, I stayed in Alexandria and paid about $250 after all the taxes, etc.

I first 'found' the hotel looking at whatever Google popped up and the various hotel websites like Expedia, etc. Then I went to the AGR web site and booked it through there. I think the total with all the taxes was about $180. But I also got 900 AGR points out of it, too. They were awarded less than a week after my stay!

DC -- Phoenix Park Hotel

NYC -- Fairfield Inn & Suites Midtown @ Penn Station
I agree, have stayed in both.
Phoenix Park is a remodeled Old Hotel ( small rooms)close to Union Station ( we had our WAS Gathering Group Dinner in the Irish Pub there)that can be reasonable or Very Pricey depending on the Season and whats going on in Sodom on the Potomac.

Fairfield Inn and Suites ( New,York) is Good, same deal as the Phoenix Park as to Price.

I stayed there in early 2016 and this past January. I believe they renovated in that time. The first time I stayed there I was pleasantly surprised by the view.

BWI airport hotels have served me well. You can take the free shuttle to the airport, and then the free shuttle to the hotel. Or the hotel may provide shuttle service from the Amtrak station.

There are several hotels at the Mills mall which has plenty of shopping and dining and even a casino.

Wow, this is very useful information for me, as NYP is my 'home station', i.e the nearest railway station to Stockholm.

What about Brunswick, Me?

Or for that matter, Halifax, if you consider VIA Rail?

A non stop flight from Stockholm Arlanda to Brunswick ME or Halifax NS may be a bit of a problem

Depending on the date, the Capital Hilton runs some pretty good specials. This is mostly on "off" weekends. I wouldn't recommend it if you have a car because parking is outrageous but it's just a few stops on the Red Line Metro to Farragut North, then a one-block bag-drag. Really, there are lots of options. Google and the Metro are your friends.
