ABQ car rental?

My wife and I will be taking the Cardinal from CVS to CUS in a couple of weeks. We will then board the Southwest Chief to ABQ. We will be sightseeing the area and then returning on the same route. Any suggestions for rental cars in ABQ? Any local tours to the Tram?

Did you try Amtrak's site. They offered two very reasonably price cars from both enterprise and Hertz thru Orbitz. Both close to union station in downtown Denver.

We will be in Albuquerque NM not Denver. The tram is to the top of Sandia Peak.

I understand your destination, where you are going is in material. Go to Amtrak. Com. Go back to your reservation and Amtrak has partnered with orbiz for car and hotel reservations. If you make a reservation thru the site it becomes part of your reservation record. I have done this about , 20 times. I was using my next trip to Denver as an example, its one of 100's of destinations available. I hope this helps.

You might want to search this forum--there was a recent thread specifically about car rentals in Albuquerque.

I've been happy with Enterprise, a short drive from Amtrak in ABQ. They'll pick you up and drop you off, and if your train is really, really late and you arrive after they're closed, they can transfer your reservation to the airport Enterprise, about a 10-15 minute cab ride from Amtrak.

Thanks to eerie rail, and the ladies, I will use the link provided to get educated.

We were in ABQ last month.

We elected to make arrangements with Enterprise at the airport directly.

Taxi ride was $15.50 and took only 10 min. with no problem hailing a cab. With departure, return the car to the car rental area and take the 5 min. shuttle to the terminal to hail cab.

We got a hell, of a deal of $82 for a Friday afternoon thru Tuesday afternoon from Enterprise.

PS Go to La Salita @ 1217 Eubank Blvd for great "New Mexican" food. (Good food, good price, Mom & Pop atmosphere)

There is an Enterprise close to the station in Albuquerque - about two blocks away. We've used them twice. Great people good rates.

Hey southern, the car I am getting Thur Amtrak, orbitz is from enterprise. It's like 33 bucks a day. Probably match box size and close to the station. I know you will find a good deal, keep us posted . safe travels.

Consider taking the RailRunner train to Santa Fe for a day or more. Takes you within walking distance of downtown or you can take the free shuttle.

If you stay downtown ABQ on a weekend night, walk over to Central Ave (a block from the station), find a restaurant with outdoor seating (decent pizza place there) and have a blast watching the slow moving traffic go by in everything from lowriders to pickups with real flames coming from vertical exhaust pipes. No honking as nobody is in a rush - they are just showing off their cars. We stayed at the Andaluz - walked from station - walked to restaurant. Will be back in early September for more.

I lived in NM for 22 years This will be third rail trip back in 3 years. Now we live in NC.

Last year had 3 nights in ABQ. Found no easy way to the Tramway on public transport (coulda took a city bus and walked a mile or three, or rented a car) but if I'm ever in ABQ again, I WILL ride up the mountain to see what I might see.

If you have a day or two in ABQ plan on a day trip on the Rail-runner to Santa Fe.

About rent-a-cars, they are relatively cheap, if you want to drive to White Sands, or Trinity site, or Taos.

You'll need a rental to get to the tram. (Ask the Tram car attendant about the TWA crash in the 50s - read up on it)

So here is an interesting tidbit - if you are familiar with the Cold War and the Rosenbergs. You can stay in the house where those secrets were exchanged and catch up on some history. The place is now a B&B 3/4 mile from the train. Look up: Spy house Albuquerque. Nice place nice folks. I've stayed there.

You don't drive to Trinity site unless you go on one of the two days a year that it is opened to ESCORTED (by military police) convoys of private vehicles from the Stallion Gate (nearest "town" is San Antonio, NM north of Socorro). By the way, San Antonio NM is nowheresville but is where Conrad Hilton of hotel fame was born and has the Owl Bar (GREAT green chile burgers). Never missed a stop at the Owl Bar for them in all my NM years when going between ABQ and home south of Las Cruces.
