I'm going to be traveling in December and was thinking it might be fun to bring along a string of miniature lights and duct tape them along the window frame in my roomette at night. Would this be tolerated?

I am not speaking officially but I don't see any objection to this. The worst that could happen is being asked to remove them.

Aloha

You'd probably be breaking all sorts of rules against unsanctioned non-standard externally visible light sources.

On the other hand I suggest you do it anyway.

Just keep in mind that with the speed and heavy window tinting it's doubtful anyone will notice what you're actually up to unless you go all-out.

So grab a mess of LED bulb sets and the biggest, brightest tree topping light contraption you can find and make with the merriment!

I would not see this as a problem. I have seen Sleeping Car Attendants decorating their cars for Christmas (notice I said Christmas and not "The Holidays"). Enjoy your trip.

The SCA may actually appreciate the gesture. Go ahead and do it! If you get any grief, feel free to blame it on me... Then again, blame it on AlanB, the_traveler, ALC_Rail_Writer, long_train-runnin' or anybody else you can think of. Just tell your SCA that they said it was OK and I'm sure you'll have no problem.... :)

that's right I have a lot of influence with Amtrak  I find explaining I'm an AU member gets you great perks like strange looks, and if you really push it a ride in the baggage car!s

Seriously though I think most attendents would enjoy your holiday spirit

I'll give it a try then. The lights only cost $3.99 at the drugstore, so I'll use them at workafter I get back if they aren't allowed.

I did this last Christmas (a very snowy one) on the Empire Builder. No problem from anyone, and it did look festive from track side.

Did you do the entire route? That would be a fun Christmas adventure! Did Mrs. Ispolkom approve of the decorations...

I've seen it done before, the rules on Amtrak prohibit in-room microwaves but make no mention of holiday lights.

110v or battery?

I could understand 110v lights being a potential fire hazard. While you might know that are brand new, Amtrak has no way to ensure such for any and all passengers.

No, I was just traveling from St. Paul to Minot, to celebrate Christmas with my Mom. And of course, if She Who Must Be Obeyed hadn't approved, I wouldn't have done it.

I used a short, old string of little, colored lights, and plugged them into the one outlet in our roomette. We attached them around our window with duct tape, as lthanlon suggested.

We're taking the same trip on Wednesday, for Thanksgiving, and there's a winter storm warning, with blowing and drifting snow and lows down to -5 F. I heard that Fargo got as much as a foot of snow today. Once again I'm grateful to be able to take the Empire Builder this time of year.

I love you for that 'do it anyway' thingy, sometimes happiness and joy must be found against the normal rules of logic, law, canonical approval.... You have your right to fair share of smiles and fun, as long as we work for the privilege.

I don't think the windows are tinted that much, every night train allows me with enough clarity I often can tell if sleeper passengers from one train to another, are going #1 or #2. Still waiting to see a Cupid or Viagra, or old fashioned labido, do its magic on the other train. Would be better, of course, if that magic were in my room!! ;-) And with a small, but bright Christmas tree? On Amtrak? That is the one of the greatest blessings one can receive. May all of you have some form of this in our lifetimes.

I checked out this thread cuz I only noticed the main title and thought it would be about the feasibility of squeezing 3 hookers into such a small space. Oh well.

Similarly, I checked out this thread because I thought someone was asking if it was OK to "ho ho ho" in a roomette (would those in adjoining rooms hear over the clickety-clack of the trucks?).

I dunno, sounds like more things to carry around on top of what I assume are already heavy luggages.

but sounds fun at the same time.

i found some cute battery-powered lights at Lowe's. they are shaped like stars and they twinkle. only $3.99 and less of a hazard/problem! :) have fun! I am trying to plan a trip for after christmas, but this makes me wish I was traveling before the holidays!! :)
