This summer on the northbound Silver Meteor, I had a very tasty curry chicken over wild rice for lunch. Of the six meals I had on that roundtrip, it was the best. Since that was my first (and so far, only) long-distance train trip, I have to say this was my best meal ever on Amtrak. ;)

In my opinion, breakfast has slipped the furthest on Amtrak. Removal of the toasters, (no English muffins, no toast) hardly ever find eggs cooked to order, but they RARELY screw up the grits!
I had a couple of good breakfasts on the EB a few months ago. They still do eggs to order and toast (I think I had toast). I normally don't care for turkey sausage but Amtrak's is pretty decent.
The Empire Builder has eggs to order and pancakes, but no toast. They do serve untoasted raisin bread, which is perhaps what you remember.

I like the black bean burger, well enough to buy it in bulk at Costco. What I like about it is that it's not pretending to be meat, like many vegetarian burgers. Nope, it's black beans and it's proud of it.

One of my favorites, like others, is the chipotle sauce that you get on the buffaloaf, and also on the pork and chipotle sauce over rice we've ordered on the California Zephyr.

The best, though, would have to be the lamb in red wine sauce we had in the Pacific Parlor Car in August. Man, that was good!

Possibly I am just into the basics, but I look forward to their Rail Road French Toast for breakfast, and their hamburger for lunch.

The worse I have had, was their Bob Evans Scramble. Absolutely nothing like what is served in an actual Bob Evans restaurant.

The flat Iron steak when riding in a sleeper and lamb on the Lake Shore.

Amtraks burger is very good or at least reasonable compared to burgers in restaurants.

I would also say wild riceand chicken is good but one chicken is always too dry to eat while other one is juicy and delicious.

I thought the ravioli on the CL was great, but I enjoyed the peanut butter pie dessert even more!
I have to agree I really like the chocolate peanut butter pie!

Of course I wasn't alive for it but the Super Chief used to offer a lamb chop at breakfast. I would have loved to give that a shot.

Spareribs on the texas eagle on the way to the STL gathering. It was cooked like you would get at outback steakhouse etc. I also like the Angus burger or all beef burger as it is now called.
Good choice Kevin...I also like the bar-b-que sandwich for lunch but it is a hit and miss item on the Crescent and City. I've never seen it on the Sunset, yet. I think it is a staple on the Screaming Eagle as they served it to us northbound into Chicago and everyone seemed to enjoy it.

Any meal on the train is a good meal ^_^ I do like the ribs on the TE, the buffallo meatloaf is really good too.since I don't eat eggs, I wish more trains served pancakes, the french toast got kinda old on my 2-week trip back in spring :( . But hands down the choclate peanut butter pie is the best desert by far

Last trip on the Southwest Chief, three people at my table (including me) ordered regular Angus Burgers and the fourth ordered a Chipotle Veggie Black Bean Burger -- and the server accidently gave me the veggie version. I immediately noticed the difference and was about to hand it to the gal who'd ordered it, but she'd already taken two big bites from the burger I was supposed to have gotten. If she noticed the difference, she didn't let on. I figured what the hey, and ate the veggie burger. It was delicious -- and I ordered it the next day at lunch, too!

I'll be on the Empire Builder in a couple of weeks and will definitely try the Buffalo Meat Loaf. It sounds great.

Sadly, I've pretty much given up on the Flat Iron Steak. I'm not sure whether I've gotten less-than-optimal cuts or what, but as I mentioned in the ChicagoScope podcast, I've had bad luck with this steak on Amtrak.

When I was on the EB this summer, I was warned, and CORRECTLY so, by the server, that the meatloaf was VERY, VERY, SPICY. Hey I love the Mexican, Thai, and other spicy food, but this was too much of the wrong spice. Didn't finish it. Don't know if the chef / food specialist on board has any leeway in adding/detracting the spice for this menu item, but be warned, or ask.

Yup the EB meatloaf is spicy. I had a flatiron steak on the EB that was very good. Last month the strip steak on the Silver Meteor was excellent. Most things I tried in the PPC on the Starlight were very good. I like the crabcakes. I'm not real fussy, I even liked the stewed flatiron steak last year. In fact I liked it a lot. The Amtrak burgers are good. Always enjoy breakfast on the train.

The Manhattan Clam Chowder on the B & O version of the CL was very good. I've always enjoyed the Flat Iron steaks of current vintage.

I had the Lamb shank on the CZ last night. My best Amtrak meal yet.

Had a very good herb roasted chicken dinner on the Silver Meteor.

We always enjoy the breakfasts.

In 1991, we rode the Pioneer from Chicago to Seattle. The prime rib was excellent. Conversely, we rode the City of New Orleans in the late 80's. My son ordered the children's spaghetti. They opened a can of Spaghetti-Os and semi warmed them in a microwave.

I'm shocked that I'm typing this, but "yes", the best meal I've ever had on Amtrak (other than what the chef used to make just for the crews) is the Chipotle Veggie Black Bean Burger.

I'm no vegan, but man, that menu item, prepared properly, (not sitting under a heat lamp for a long time) truly is tasty.

I'll add my vote for that, and with the same background of "not vegan". I should have ordered it with cheese to kill the heat a little (I'm not one that likes overly spicy things) but I still enjoyed it on my Eagle trip to Chicago last May.

Mmmmm...HALIBUT on the Empire Builder last weekend. Droooooooollll. Ordered it Saturday AND Sunday.

In June 2008, I had Rainbow Trout on the Empire Builder. Best meal I've ever had on the train and the best tasting trout I've ever had anywhere.

Believe it or not I ha a really, really good turkey sandwich from the cafe car. I really liked it. Went back for a second.

That was the 80's, also when ordering of a child's menu you aren't going to get the best quality food, I learned this at an early age and would order off the adult menu. One can only eat so many luke warm hot dogs, badly made grilled cheese, or PP&J's before they realize they are getting shafted.

I have no idea what they charged I was a kid, I didn't look at prices.

Kids menus have such limited items and they are almost always they same and they never tasted great.
