I'll admit, I'm in the minority, but I'm a Pepsi fan. That said, I think I'll survive this change. :-)

    NYP first class lounge question

Since you're on a sleeper, you can get access to the Acela lounge. It's tucked in a corner, and a bit dark but, nice, quiet, and clean bathrooms.

Long trip on coach with kids?

Couple of comments: On the Crescent I've often asked about upgrade from coach to sleeper and often gotten a "yes, it's available". I've declined because of price (I often coach NYP-Atlanta and sleeper back). One additional advantage of sleeper is you'd get access to the Acela Lounge in NYP which...

Lake Shore Limited NY to Chicago

Yeah, you do NOT get a seat in coach. But, the seats in the Roomette tend to be comfortable enough. I tend to stay in my roomette a lot on the LSL, especially since it's mostly at night. Remember, the LSL no longer has a full dining experience. You get basically a reheated box dinner/breakfast...

Viewliner II Part 3: Bag/Dorm Car Production, Delivery, Speculation

I can't say how often the crew really needs access, but on my last trip on the Crescent, the sleeping car attendant definitely took advantage of the access to store an oversized suitcase a couple had brought with them not realizing how small the roomettes were. I suspect access ends up being...

Experiential service class on long distance routes

Here's the thing.. cafe cars actually DO have an oven. (or at least did, I think they still do). But I've been told attendants are not allowed to use them due to the risk of fire/burns. That said I've seen that rule violated at least twice. Once was for a perfectly done sub sandwich. The...

The elusive Boston sleeper (March 4 -5, 2019?)

This is all more reason to bring back a sleeper on 67/68, so that the Boston sleeper can more easily be rotated in/out. One of these days.. perhaps...

Viewliner II Part 4: Sleeping Car production, delivery, deployment

Truth! Actually... at this rate, if the option is still available, they'll be in place to exercise it right after the 2020 elections. That could be convenient :-)

I'm just trying to keep current on the progress of the cars.

He was just going with the flow. Seriously, I was partly joking, but yes, I do think Amtrak SHOULD take advantage of the option, but I don't expect them too, especially under this administration.

Viewliner II Part 2: Dining Car Production, Delivery, Speculation

Yeah, I have mixed feelings about the lack of the en suites. I support it from a cost/maintenance POV, but as a solo traveler often, they are definitely useful and nice.

    LSL to Boston

No, but to be honest, it's not just the quality, it's the entire experience. I'm also not thrilled with the "no coach passengers" aspect, in part because right now I'm more likely to be riding it in coach.

    LSL to Boston

Personally I've never found the horn an issue, I actually sort of like it. I'd go with option 1. For one thing, Toledo's station is not in a great part of town (I've caught the LSL there 2-3 times in the middle of the night) and so I'd prefer to avoid that. 2nd of all, might as well enjoy the...

Personally I'm disappointed there's no Housatonic River on the list. I'd suggest it's a larger, more known river than some of those shown. The obvious solution is to exercise the 70 car option so more sleepers can be delivered and they can name more rivers.

Viewliner II Part 2: Dining Car Production, Delivery, Speculation

Every once in awhile I've found 66/67 tempting, even just from WAS to NYP, so a sleeper would make it even more tempting. (oh here's a far-fetched idea for 20 years in the future. A set-out sleeper in each direction at NYP picked up by an early morning departure to Albany!
