Union Depot (Station) St. Paul, MN

There is a restaurant in St. Paul Union Depot, Station 81 open to 8PM Tues-Fri, 4PM Sat-Mon. The Urban Wok is directly across 4th St. from the front of the Depot and the past Light Rail stop. It’s open until 11PM. A couple more are further up Wacouta Ave. at 6th St. The Bulldog is open until...

Amtrak taking first step on Meridian Speedway LD service

Calm down everybody; note from the story, this is only for a proposal for a STUDY: ". . .would pay for 80% of a study of track and station improvements. . ." What will be a typical timeframe from study to booking a trip from NYC to DAL; 10 - 15 years? Just sayin'!

The Olympian Hiawatha, The Empire Builder, The North Coast Limited

Since riding all four back in the day my vote is for the NCL. Yes Oly had the Super Domes & Skytops, and EB had Big Domes and Glacier Park too. However NCL had Dome Sleepers, plenty of short domes, Stewardess Nurses, arguably better food (think Big Baked Potato), Yellowstone Park and the...

    Upgrading to Sleeper onboard?

There is basically "assigned seating" in regards to sleeping cars. Someone could book a Family Bedroom from MSP to FAR and thus block a family who wants to book from CHI to GPK. In the "olden days", 60's & 70's, before Hub-and-Spoke. airlines would fly one-plane "routes". I flew one plane...

Coast Starlight PPC Vs. SSL Question

Will be riding the southbound Coast Starlight next week. What is the current status of SSL's on the CS? Is there just one? Or have they replaced the PPC with an SSL so now there are two SSL's?

    Nashville to Williams

The Bus-River Runner- SWC itinerary is bookable Online. But be sure to select WILLIAMS JCT, NOT just Williams AZ as the Destination. The Grand Canyon Railway Hotel van will pick you up at Williams Jct whenever the train arrives.

Viewliner II - Part 1 - Initial Production and Delivery

I agree with Charlie. The VW2 Diner interior has about as much ambiance as a Waffle House interior. IMO The ceiling needs to be a darker shade to give the impression that it's lower. That would provide a more personal feeling to the dining area; less like a school cafeteria or high school...

    Questions on Amsnag Accuracy

IIRC on AmSnag be careful if you’re pricing a sleeper space. It seems to me one had to add a coach fare for every person in a Roomette or Bedroom. An example on AmSnag; coach fare is $100; a Roomette charge is $150. For 2 people in a Roomette that would be (2 X $100) + $150 = $350 total fare...

    Too far away for prices?

Here's what I see for 09/23/15 for 20 days and 01/23/16 for 20 days. This is for MSP to GPK. What happened to the $115 Coach, $157 Roomettes, $346 Family Bedrooms and $343 Bedrooms after Jan. 1, 2016? 01/23/16 is probably not a high demand time of year for the EB. One might expect lower...

    Too far away for prices?

Here’s an observation and question. I was looking at the Empire Builder for my son to GPK. I first tried AmSnag and thought I was seeing a mistake. I went to the AMTK site and saw the same thing. If you try and find a fare more then exactly six months out you get exactly the same fare for...

    ATC

So exactly what was implemented over last weekend at the Frankford Junction curve, real PTC, some kind of ATC or . . .? There have been some fairly knowledgeable sounding interviews on MSNBC regarding safety systems. One with Secy. Foxx and one with Sen. Thune of the Senate Transportation...

EB connections to be restored 1/23/15

Interestingly I was on a trip from NYP to MSP last February. I had a ticket that showed a continuous trip on the LSL #49 and EB #7. This allowed a 4+ hour connection in Chicago. Well due to last winters weather #49 was 4+ hours late into Chicago that day. They did hold the EB for an extra...

Here's a couple of photos of the "intercity" Bi-levels. The Lounge and Parlor sections. Quite different then the Commuter Cars.

    Silver Sleepers Sold out

The vast majority of today’s travelers are price sensitive not amenity sensitive. If the price point is correct demand will go up. If it doesn’t, it wasn’t priced right. It's not that the customers are holding out for a “free” steak. No one I think is talking about a “foodless” 28-hr Silver...
