New Gulf Coast Amtrak service (New Orleans - Mobile and Baton Rouge)

Booked a trip on the Crescent to Atlanta and New Orleans in September. Fingers crossed the line to Mobile will be in service by then! My two trips through New Orleans on the Sunset/CONO/Crescent earlier this year were too early to also catch a ride to Mobile.

    Amtrak in New England

If you have the time to spend 2 nights in Burlington, I highly suggest it, however the hotel market (especially near downtown and the lakefront) is usually quite pricy, especially on a holiday weekend and through leaf peeping season (September to 2nd weekend of October). Incorporating the newly...

    Vermonter now running to Vermont?

I'm a couple weeks late to the thread, but the Vermonter and Ethan Allen had quite the welcome back to the state of Vermont back on July 19 after a 480 day suspension. Every station in Vermont had a sizeable celebration thanks to funding from the VT Department of Transportation, with dignitaries...

    Rouses Point Subdivision (Adirondack)

I've taken a few videos of the Adirondack along the CP line north of the border. The train does go very slow, at least between Saint Jean and Cantic. The only video I wound up posting on YouTube was of the Adirondack at St.-Jean-Sur-Richelieu in June 2016:

Denver to Raton ~ Thruway Bus route?

I did the Denver to Raton shuffle last August, taking the Zephyr east and picking up the Chief at Raton to continue to Chicago. I opted to rent a car, leaving Denver early in the morning, and making a quick trip to Great Sand Dunes National Park to go sandboarding. I didn't have a ton of time at...

    Schenectady, NY Parking

I plan to take a trip later this month on the Lake Shore Limited out of Schenectady that would involve parking my car at or near the station for two nights (Saturday ~7pm to Monday ~2pm. Amtrak's website (and the NY By Rail Website) lists that overnight parking is not available at the station...

    Cardinal NYP to CHI Question

Going west, the best scenery may end up being in the dark even with daylight hours starting to get longer in March. Both of my westbound Cardinal trips have been in December or January, and so my first eastbound trip this summer felt like I was taking a whole new route since so much of the...

Staffed to Unstaffed Stations Master Thread

The waiting room at Waterbury, VT was also closed during hours listed as open on Amtrak's website when I boarded the northbound Vermonter this past week. It's an unstaffed station but has station hosts to open the waiting room, provide train status updates and provide passenger assistance.

    Vermonter questions

There should be taxi and decent Uber/Lyft availability at Essex Junction when the train arrives. In addition, Green Mountain Transit operates the Blue Line bus between Essex Junction's Amtrak station and downtown Burlington, continuing on to Shelburne (the route passes by a number of hotels...

    Last minute sleeper pricing

I noticed this as well when I took the California Zephyr and Cardinal last month. I had a bedroom on the Zephyr from Emeryville to Denver, which was going at bucket 4 or 5 for the three weeks prior to my trip. A few days before my departure bedrooms were back at bucket 2, and went to bucket 1...

    Winter Park Ski Train 2019/2020

Tickets don't seem to be bookable yet, since plugging in a random Saturday in January from DEN to WPR shows only the Zephyr to a Thruway bus at Fraser. The link on Winter Park's website to book tickets leads to a "page not found" error on Amtrak's site.

    Current Cardinal consist

When I rode CHI-NYP about 2 weeks ago, there was only one sleeper (#5000) which was the second to last car (baggage car was the rearmost car)

    Shortest/Cheapest rides in Amtrak

Don't think it can get much cheaper than the $1.00 fare from New Haven, CT's Union Station (NHV) to State Street Station (STS). 1-2 minute ride depending on the train.

    coolers

Haven't had much luck getting ice from my SCA's, though a handful have put a KFC-size bucket of ice out for the car during the evening hours. On my trip on the Southwest Chief last winter, when much of New Mexico got a heavy snowfall, my SCA gave me one of the "ice buckets" to fill with snow...

An Amtrak route segment no longer in use

From ~1995 to 2014, The Vermonter used to travel via the New England Central Railroad all the way from St. Albans, VT to Palmer, MA, but now switches to a different line via Greenfield, Northampton and Holyoke. Service to Amherst was cut with the reroute. Here's the last northbound train to...
