    Cardinal discussion

Time and money may be barriers. That’s totally valid. @OP: I definitely prefer the scenery on the LSL. Much more interesting than the Cardinal. In the most respectful way possible, there’s something intensely fascinating about the urban decay visible from the LSL. Dinner on the Hudson is...

    Viewliner Names

Haven't been here in quite a while. Apologies if this is covered elsewhere. Anyone know if the following Viewliner name/ rename list is still accurate? 62000 - Altamaha River 62001 - Anacostia River 62002 - Appomattox River 62003 - Big Otter River 62004 - Big Sandy River 62005 - Calumet...

    Best lunches near Penn Station

Agreed. When budget is not of concern, Keens is a great pick. Their lamb/mutton is amazing.

Amfleet Business Car being used for coach on Vermonter (56/21)

OT: I did once see a Capstone coach used as a bag on the Crescent.

What's the deal with menus nowadays?

I love Amtrak, and I love overcooked dining car burgers about as much as is humanly possible, but... To be fair, getting passengers "excited" about the diner on most trains would be akin to advertising a luxury car dealership that, in reality, sold used 1989 Geo Metros and a single 1992 Bimmer...

    The Need for Secondary Options

I agree. It would (a) be nice, and (b) make sense. Echoing what has been posted before: Host RRs, in most cases I can think of, do not exist to serve passengers. They exist to move freight and make profit (and Amtrak's incentives are hardly profit). Unfortunately, this means that things...

Steaming at the Diner Crew on the 4 (5)

I must say that my experience tends to be quite the opposite of many posters', but it took years of hearing loss to get to this point. :D

Testing the policy of carry on baggage.

In my experience (which includes moving drum sets halfway across the country) Amtrak will let you take basically anything on board, but it's only a virtual guarantee if you're leaving from a major station. At smaller stations, I've occasionally boarded to full luggage racks, and have...

    New L.A. Waiting Room

Chicago used to be like that. As a kid, I used to help my grandmother onto the train. If I recall correctly, they started enforcing stuff somewhere after 9/11.

The Economist explains: Why don't Americans ride trains?

Here in Vermont, I sometimes see ads for the Ethan Allen and Vermonter on buses and in newspapers. (And, interestingly, at the airport.) I guess the state wants people riding. However, if I want to go anywhere that the train goes, the train is always the least convenient option. With new-ish...

What reason do you hear from people for not riding Amtrak

It seems that most of the people I know simply don't know where Amtrak does and doesn't go, and don't even consider it as an option. As for the people I know who actively choose not to ride, they do so because the train takes too long. BTV/ESX—NYP takes hours longer than driving.

VT commits to extending Ethan Allen to Burlington by 2017

I hear them from my house, and can see them if I cross the street. It would be nice to have an Amtrak service nearby. Hopefully they'll use the station downtown.
