Traveling on The Ocean to Montreal in mid-October. Curious how likely it will be that new corridor trainsets will be running more often than not? Is there anyway to tell when booking? Thx.
We booked a "large cabin for 2" on the eastbound Ocean this September. It's difficult to find a layout for this exact Unit "A" (versus the regular cabin for 2). I assume it's larger than the regular cabin given the title, but what is the bed arrangement?
That hotel is totally worth it, by the way. We stayed there one night before departing on the Zephyr and our room literally looked out over the tracks. We awoke to the "ding ding ding" of the A Line arriving on test runs. The rooms are gorgeous and spacious.

the only thing that rail proponents should be focused on is the creation of passenger rail or high speed rail title in the next transportation bill. one has never existed before, and once one is created it will likely exist for eternity (or at least the 6 year life of the bill). amtrak has...
i would never assume that the sparse advertising covers the cost of production, let alone bringing in additional revenue. one only needs to look at the airlines for proof that printed schedules are no money maker. this also applies to paper tickets. both will be gone very soon.

timetables should be printed for unstaffed stations without quiktrak machines. other than that, a printed timetable should be available by request only. printing is expensive and wasteful. amtrak would be better off using that money for more advertising or improved station signage.
i was browsing NYP-MTR flights on hipmunk.com the other day and noticed that the adirondack came up in the results. the site doesn't appear to show all amtrak routes (KCY-STL), but i just checked NYP-BBY and saw results for regional and acela. the site's blog doesn't mention amtrak integration...
i've hopped on amtrak to have dinner in downtown lee's summit (LEE). it was just $8 each way from KCY at the time, now $8.50. the current schedule allows for a little over four hours of play time.
i will echo the super shuttle option. do not waste all that money on a cab. also, probably wouldn't hurt to call your hotel and ask them if they have a free shuttle that would pick you up downtown somewhere.
amtrak probably sees itself competing with buses and private autos more than anything else. but as others have said, where a market for short-haul flights exists -- and there are plenty of such examples outside of the northeast -- amtrak (or any other passenger rail operator) can and should...
