I am planning a trip (RVR to CHI) that I am only 50% sure that I will take. I feel that I need to book it now since the price is at low bucket and I want to make sure that I have a sleeper.

I am trying to decide whether it is best to use point or cash. In the event that I have to cancel which payment option will give me the least grief and loss?

Use your credit card.

Last year, under the old cancellation/refund policy rules, I unexpectedly had to reschedule everything a week later than originally planned. I used points going and credit card returning...roomette both ways. As it was less than 14 days advance revision, I got a 20% points penalty as it was less than 14 days (10%) AND I had a sleeper (another 10%). I don't recall any penalty as they simply issued a voucher which was then immediately used.
