Starting tomorrow, Nov 1, trains on Metro-North's Harlem line will begin to seriously serve two stations in the Bronx.
Trains have been stopping at the Melrose and Tremont stations only every two hours. The improved service will be hourly. The first morning trains will run earlier, 5:37a.m. NB and 5:51 SB; evening trains will now run much later, past midnight, 1:20 a.m. NB and 12:47 SB.
The "new" stops and better service may allow more reverse commuting to jobs in the suburbs as well as to the jobs in "the City". BTW, the "Harlem line" passes thru Harlem, with a busy station at 125th St. But most of its passengers are commuting from tree-shaded suburbs to Grand Central Terminal and the jobs in Midtown Manhattan.
Personally, I worried we'd never see it, that suburban NIMBYs, fearing the service would be used by black and brown and Spanish-speaking residents often found in the Bronx, would block the changes. But starting tomorrow morning at 5:37 a.m., it will be All Aboard! at the Tremont and Melrose stations. It's a good step toward equity in transportation.
