A link to a story on a start up seeking fund by crowd source was posted in General Railroad. Not a place I hang out too often. This is of course in Europe, and not the USA. However I think it's a great idea, and sent them a few bucks.

So now the thought, can we crowd source some improvements to the national system here in USA.

Ok the Sunset Limited East might be out of our range, but can we do the Pennsylvanian/Capitol Limited through cars advised in the PIP. Or maybe just the single switch need at the station?

Feedback welcome, hate mail will be returned to sender.

You'd have to get agreements from the parties involved first (in the case of the Pittsburgh switch, Amtrak and NS).

The most successful crowdfunded rail operations like this are for new branch lines, where there's nobody you need agreement from other than landowners.

The German operation is taking advantage of Europe's "Open Access" rules on railways, where anyone with the funding can demand to run a passenger train. For bizarre historical reasons, that isn't the case in the US.
