Now we all call it the "Acela Express" locomotive, but it must have a name like the "HHP-8" or "AEM-7". If the Acela Express has one, does anyone know what that name is?

Well since the consits are fixed it doesn't really have one. It's not like an Acela Express is changing locomotives like other trains do (P-40's, P-42's, P-32's, HHP-8's, AEM-7's, AEM-7AC's, and E-60MA's).

Good point, but lets say VIA Rail Canada wanted to buy twenty trainsets (not that they would since the Acela is a peice of crap), but wanted a different name (VIA Express). So what would you call the standardized trainset, Acela Express or VIA Express.

Actually, they refer to them as power cars and not a locomotive or engine. I suppose however that if forced to give them a designation, they might well consider them as some variation of the HHP line. To a large extent the loco's are similar in design, one reason that they also suffered from the same yaw damper failure as the Acela Express power cars.

Now as for Via Rail or anyone else ever buying the exact Acela Express trains again, you can forget that idea. No one will ever buy that same design again, not even Amtrak. So it will always just be the Acela Express.

Dumb question time:

How can one tell the difference between a P-40, P-42 or a P-32?

The P-40's are 800-843

The P-42's are 1-207

The P-32-AC-DM's (700-717) have 3rd rail shoes and are on the empire corridor.

There are also P-32-8's
