Yes, another round of service changes are coming as a result of the work being done on the Manhattan Bridge. Only this time in 2004, the work should be completed, so the changes should be at least semi-permanent. As you will see below, the changes will not necessarily represent a return to the way things were before the diversions started (sometime in the late 1980's or early 1990's?). In short, they are swapping the former B and D routes in Brooklyn, and in another surprise move they are retaining the W designation, which did not exist before 2001, although it will no longer run in Brooklyn. Note that current Q (circle) service will be unchanged, while the <Q> (diamond) is being replaced by another route. This also assumes full resumption of service to Coney Island on the F, Q, and N lines.

Here is the release:

Manhattan Bridge Subway Service Changes

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) proposes to resume full subway service on the Manhattan Bridge upon the completion of the New York City Department of Transportation's Manhattan Bridge Reconstruction Project in early 2004 and reopen the tracks that connect to the Sixth Avenue line in Manhattan.

Proposed Subway Changes

N from Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue would run along the Sea Beach line, express along the Fourth Avenue line, across the Manhattan Bridge, express along the Broadway line (and serving the local stop at 49th Street), then through the 60th Street Tunnel to Astoria-Ditmars Boulevard, on weekdays between approximately 6 a.m. and 11 p.m. On weekends, N would operate along the same route in Brooklyn, over the Manhattan Bridge, but local on the Broadway line. Late nights, N would operate through Montague Street Tunnel, local in Brooklyn and Manhattan.

D would replace W in Brooklyn, running from Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue, along the West End line, express along the Fourth Avenue line, across the Manhattan Bridge, express along the Sixth Avenue and Central Park West lines to 145th Street, then along the Concourse line to Norwood-205th Street. D would operate local in Brooklyn during late nights.

B from Brighton Beach would run express along the Brighton line, across the Manhattan Bridge, express along the Sixth Avenue line to 59th Street, then local along the Central Park West line to 145th Street, during midday, or Bedford Park Boulevard, Bronx, during rush hours. B would operate weekdays between approximately 6 a.m. and 11 p.m.

S Grand Street Shuttle would be discontinued, replaced by B and D service.

W would operate local from Whitehall Street along the Broadway line, then through 60th Street Tunnel to Astoria-Ditmars Boulevard, weekdays between approximately 6 a.m. and 10 p.m.

<Q> service would be replaced by B in Brooklyn and N in Manhattan.

M service would operate between Middle Village-Metropolitan Avenue, and Chambers Street, on weekdays, extended to Bay Parkway, during peak periods. Evening, late night, and weekend service would operate between Middle Village-Metropolitan Avenue and Myrtle Avenue.

My sincere apologies to those who could not read my yellow route letters because they were too light. I replaced them with "gold", and they now look much better.
