  1. My wife and I will soon be taking the CZ from Chicago to California, then the EB from Portland to Mpls. I know there is no WiFi service on these trains, but I am wondering about cell phone service. I have a T-Mobile 3G/4G dongle that I am hoping to use for internet access on the trip. The T-Mobile coverage map is pretty detailed, but it doesn't show the Amtrak route. (I know!) It does look like the cell towers mainly follow the freeways in the wide open spaces, but I can't find a good enough Amtrak map online to determine how much of the trips will be close enough to the freeways to ensure access. Can anyone here enlighten me as to the availability of any cell service, and more specifically T-Mobile, enroute? I don't need to have my nose stuck in the computer all day, but an hour or so each day would be really helpful.

My wife and I are going to be taking our first big trip on Amtrak in August. We will be taking the California Zephyr from Chicago to California, driving up the coast, then taking the Empire Builder (keeping our fingers crossed) from Portland to Minneapolis. Roomettes both ways. We've always wanted to take the train over the Rockies, and are really looking forward to it. My questions here have to do with luggage. We will likely each have one large bag and a smaller carry-on type bag. I have seen references to a baggage area on the sleeping car (down below?). Should we check our bags at the station? If we do, where do the bags go? Will they be accessible on the trip? If we don't check them, can we load them ourselves into the baggage area on the sleeper car? If it's possible, I like to do the work myself, and make sure the bags get onto the train with me. One of these is a transdorm car, if that makes a difference.

Thanks for all your replies! Looks like there's some diversity of opinion here, but I think I have a better idea of what to expect now.
