  1. I took the winter "rump" consist Feb of 2018 and was in the first sleeper. The horn was very noticeable. I cannot recall the car number in the consist but I'm guessing other posters will have that information. With that information you may be able to modify your reservation to the second sleeper where I found the horn noise to be less onerous.
  2. Back in the day when the James Whitcomb Riley combined with the Hilltopper to Chicago and a number of times when the CL was single level with a dome. Prior to Amtrak on some of the Zephyrs and the original B & O Cap Ltd. The dome that had the spotlights that lit up the scenery at night.
  3. The dessert in a picture posted by PVD in the other thread showed the dessert made by Daystar Desserts. I find their offerings very good having them in other boxed lunches, purchased from grocers and restaurants. They were an Ashland, VA based company until recently they merged with a Mass. company. The link has a recent article about the company products. https://www.richmond.com/business/local/sweet-tooth-hanover-s-daystar-desserts-merges-with-another-dessert/article_e3143f34-723e-5915-a100-e44803efffd3.html
  4. Thanks to both. I'll likley stay with what I have as the first class pax has access to the lounge. This will likely be my first and last opportunity to enjoy an overnight sleeper in the UK so I'll take full advantage. It will be interesting to see what differences in service quality exist between the Caledonian and Amtrak.
  5. The later part of July 2018 we will be taking our first trip on the Caledonian from London to Inverness. Travelling will be me, my wife and 20 year old daughter. We booked first class accommodations. Since this is our first time I'm looking for suggestions/tips from those that have ridden to help make the trip better for a first timer. Also, I could not readily figure out how to book my wife and I in the same room as room selection was based on the sex of the traveller. I booked flexible fares so could change so any suggestions on how best to do this would be most welcome.

Amtrak's New "Fresh Choices" Dining on CL & LSL

You will have to wait to Pittsburgh to heat and eat, Cumberland is no longer a fresh air stop. It may be time to revisit the microwave in roomette thread started by MeatPuppet some moons ago.
  7. Not really, maybe over your feet. The link below has a side view diagram but does not seem totally accurate to me. It makes the rooms look larger. https://thelibrary.org/lochist/frisco/history/Images/presentation/side2-panel-k.jpg I found the link in this RAILforum thread. http://www.railforum.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi/topic/11/5116.html
  8. Just a minor correction...the zippered curtains were on the outside of the roomette doors (the aisle side).... Why would they stick curtains on the aisle side? That totally compromises privacy. The curtains were fully secured to the walls on the sides, no compromise to privacy. The only thing that opened was the zipper in the middle Right, but (and not to get hung up on this) couldn't someone outside just unzip it and see the occupant 'using the facilities'? The zipper pull faced inwards so would be difficult for someone outside to open. Up until Amtrak stopped smoking on trains, one could smoke in their sleeping accommodation so they always smelled like smoke. I prefer the 10-6 roomette over Superliner and dearly miss the Slumbercoach.

    Coast to Coast Cell Service

On the Capitol Limited cell service between Cumberland, Md. and Pittsburgh, PA in intermittent. I have Verizon.
  10. Oh my god!!!! You’re the first person I’ve ever found (in real life or online) that has also seen that video!!!!! It has the weirdest/worst acting I think I’ve ever seen - in a good way. For example: “Hi, I’m Jim!” like 30 seconds after he’s already said hello and introduced himself. It just cracks me up. I’m literally creating a fake trailer for a ‘Jim Horror Movie’ using footage from the video. Some of the youtube comments allude to Jim's creepiness. I enjoyed the video because I miss the 10-6 sleepers and slumbercoachs.
  11. Here's mine. A little too scripted but it is a good history lesson of Amtrak accommodations. This video has been posted here before.

    Multi-City option

Your preferred routing comes up for me just by plugging in RVR-CHI. Screen Shot 2018-01-31 at 8.37.50 PM.png I wasn't clear on the post you quoted. The screen shot you provided shows the Cardinal connection RVR- WAS using dollars not points. I was trying to book with points. I just tried a 2/16/18 departure, RVR-CHI using points and the only Cardinal connection is the thruway bus from RVR to CVS. I get the same result if booking with cash. Seems to be the date that's an issue. I just tried it and got what you got. Then I tried 2/11 and got 98/51 with cash and with points. Thanks to you and Ryan for taking the time to do research and help me out.

The rub there is that the routes I wanted to take were not allowed. I wanted to take the Cardinal from WAS to CHI but leaving from RVR the approved routing was to take the thruway bus from RVR to CVS which I did not want to do. In the past iteration of the Amtrak website this could be accomplished but I've yet to figure out how with the new site. Book them separately? Book RVR-WAS with cash then WAS-CHI with points? I get that, but using the old website I was able to book the entire 4 segment trip multi city using points. As far as I can tell using the multi city tool precludes the use of points. I was going to try to post screen shots but the Amtrak website is not responding as I write.
