    Chicago-Rockford Service On Hold

Wonder if all his salary and benefits are assigned to LD trains?

    Long anti Anderson Article

So there ae some Amtrak ads for short haul trains. Wonder how many ads are state or local ads? Our many trips to Florida have never come across an ad for Amtrak to the North east or even in Florida. Has there been any ads for LD destinations that anyone knows of?

Will Gov Shutdown bring more riders to Amtrak?

We have wondered if the treasury department will come out with regulation saying any government employee who is not getting paid cannot be penalized for not paying mortgage, credit card or items until they are paid back pay? ?. What is worse what happens if there is a major accident that the NTSB cannot investigate. That is already happened with the Florida highway accident!
  6. Why is demand lower in winter? That is an important question not asked or answered. Agree demand is somewhat lower in winter but should increase in winter to Florida! Our unsubstantiated thoughts are there is no Amtrak advertising for LD trains which should be done in winter time. That advertising can spill over to summer! ACL and SAL actually had to add equipment and trains in winter. As well they both borrowed other equipment from RRs that did have a excess of winter time equipment. We do recognize that Amtrak can schedule more medium and light maintenance on equipment in winter but there is no justification for so many pieces being sidelined. Because it is winter ground HEP has to be kept connected and horrors what if ground power has a long time supply failure. If Beech has a failure? ? Getting enough locos connected in time is problematic.

    92(10) Delay

Yes there are future plans for some Tri-Rail trains to go off their rails at Iris onto the east west FEC freight yard connection then Tri-Rail will turn south onto the FEC to the Brightline station. When? Have not seen an answer. As well construction work is at some progress point to allow connection Tri-Rail track just north of Palm Beach past the hurricane cemetery to connect to the FEC line northbound. Have not heard but this last connection was at one time set to restore to passenger train specs for Tri-Rail to go south from MGP to south on FEC ? Boston South Station

Really like those ceilings. If We-Fi open probably too many log ons by MBTA riders ? Maybe suggest a plug in to hard wire net from laptop or I phone ?
  10. Yes let us worry more about getting more equipment not spending money on paint jobs !

    Crescent cancellations?

The Atlanta station has Potable water supply boxes that service the Crescent every day. As well they have a motorized honey wagon for toilet servicing as well. Once the water servicing is complete the train set proceeds south to Howell junction and wyes there then proceeds north past the station, takes a siding that is on the SE side of the 2 main tracks and then backs down past the station onto what is called the steel spur ( siding ) and parks . Depending on train set length locos may end up just SE of station. Toilet servicing, refueling, and cleaning then proceeds. Do not know if cleaning crew starts work on cars as train set goes thru the wye process ? Some time before departure train set proceeds north up siding then backs down to station for an on time departure . .

    What would you add?

It would seem that Ashville service start at the base of Old Fort Loops. Run a thruway from there to Ashville. That would make NC DOT schedules much more time appealing ! Could make it a station stop with a stub end siding with required surface HEP, potable water, lavatory servicing !
  13. One of our groupe postulated that maybe Amtrak is causing all these problems to get congress to fund Amtrak properly. Find that unlikely but 2 or 4 more Amfleets ?
  14. Some one with time check but believe that one RT during several mid weeks is cancelled for the maintenance blitz !

    New LD Locomotive Order Placed

You bring up an interesting question. The Carolinian is state supported by NC however on previous Amtrak reports ( no longer available ) it was listed in the LD trains.
  16. Not enough single level LD coaches available/ + we do not know if the V-2 sleepers will be delivered.
  17. Until SOU RR joined Amtrak its main overhaul location / storage yard was located in ATL about even distance south of Howell junction and the remains of Terminal station. AAll work on passenger rail cars was performed there. If a car became bad order as long as it was road worthy the bad order cars would be deadheaded to ATL to be repaired. Extra cars were kept in NOL, WASH, and NY to cover any bad order cars. All BO cars were on front of train to ATL. SOU changed all locos both north and south at ATL and placed fresh locos. For trains that stopped the 4 days at ATL the train would leave Peachtree station stop at the car yard and leave the cars there for the next assignment. The loco would then proceed on south to Pegram shop for their next assignment anything from just servicing to major overhaul. The 3 days a week a switcher would add/ remove cars from the car yard and inbound locos would D/H to Pegram. SOU had 16 E units 6900 - 6915 mainly for Crescent and some F units for back up and other trains. SOU had about 4 - 6 times needed cars including many heavy weight cars so the extra cars could make second/ third sections when needed. All cars were give away quickly after SOU joined Amtrak. All SOU cars were steam heated and Amtrak from day 1 immediately converted Crescent to HEP. Amtrak did take a few SOU diners and converted them to HEP.

    Sunset Limited temp schedule

Probably due to LAX commuter train schedules ?

    New LD Locomotive Order Placed

That is so however a bi level that tall could only operate the Sunset and Coast starlight routes. And Auto train which would be a very good route to use. Only problem how to get that high of a car to Beech ? Cannot clear CHI or WASH CAT and 1st street tunnel.

    New LD Locomotive Order Placed

The only way a bi level car could have access on 2 levels is ---------- . If the wheel arrangement is such that each wheel only has a short axel such as a few Talgos have.
  21. With the winter time slump in riders maybe Amtrak can free up several Amfleets until the Easter rush ? And of course use the V-2 diners in storage ?
  22. The big problem at Frankford junction has been reported as the plant that was inside the curve at Frankford has become a hazards waste disposal site. Try tunneling under that !
  23. MARC three to four times a week has to limit passengers boarding for various reasons. They will even bypass some stations inbound to WASH and also limit boarding at WASH outbound. MARC even posts and alerts passengers the trains that are in such a problem.
  24. NS seem to have solved most problems on the LSL and Capitol. Now the delays are even worse on the Crescent. The delays have spread from just south of ATL to the whole NS route. 9 hours delays the other day with just 3 from freight train disabled.
