In am heading to Niagara Falls on Empire Service in less then 2 weeks now. I am a little worried now that I checked the station hours. They say their open from 6:30 AM to 4:40 PM I am supposed to arrive at 7:45 PM, so what can I expect I think I need a taxi to get to my hotel (the crown plaza US side of things) will they be there should I call and see if the hotel will pick us up? I mean its walkable if all else fails just wouldn't be great.

Bigger concern... coming back. We are booked on the first train out Amtrak called to tell me that this train will now be leaving NFL at 6:40 that means the station is set to open just 10 minutes ahead of departure??

Is the station nice? the area?

Thanks guys! :)

:) the ny side is pretty grim, station is quiet a ways out of town, taxi would be a must based on whatI saw when there 2 years ago!Have you considered staying for the crossing tothe Ontario station,

NF,ON is much nicer, the train changes from amtrak to via there, customs, homeland ****s etc work it there!

The hotels, attractions etc. are much better in Canada, also the station is an old time brick, the attendants

are canadian friendly!Really consider this, you will need a passport and consider buying the cobo book for all the

attractions, its a real deal!Watch out for the casinos, they will clean you out quicker than a New Orleans B-girl!

:)

Yeah would much prefer to stay on the Canadian side however this trip is more about going to see Niagara Falls University so using the New York side of things is the easiest way to see the school and such.

The only problem with taking it to Ontario is that the only train that crosses the border is the Maple Leaf! OP stated Empire Service - all of which terminate in NY! The ML is not Empire Service. Also, the OP mentioned a 6:40 AM departure - that is not the ML either!

:) You are correct about the Maple Leaf vs. Empire Service but the tickets can be changed esily, when I went my Canadian amigos in Oakville told me to stay on till the Canadian side, I switched in NYP

to the Maple Leaf,no charge(!!!) and boy was I glad!!!Of course the hassle of going back and forth is

a much higher level of hassle now what with the paranoia in the govt. over "terrorists" even though the

homegrown ones seem more of a problem than tourists going to from NF and Toronto!!!!The falls are worth the

trip, everything else is Mardi-Gras/Disneyland etc. Have a great trip!!!Bon voyage!

From the hotel's own website....

Train

I've seen the building in numerous photos and I can tell you that it is a really grim looking station! I think you would rather stay outside while waiting.

The station inside is really not that bad! :)

It's a bit of a hike, but you can walk from the station to downtown in about an hour or maybe an hour and a half, including getting a little lost on the way. It's a little confusing, but the access road to the station from the main route loops around to the back of the station, so just walk up that way (as opposed to through the weeds and brush, like I did) and you'll be set.

A taxi would be significantly easier, but if no cab is in sight, there you go. :)

When I last visited Niagara Falls, a good number of taxis met the train. My only trouble was finding a cabbie who could travel into Canada. I never set foot in the station, so I cannot comment on it.
Have a good trip!

Mike

The cabbie can take you to the Rainbow Bridge, where you can just walk across as a pedestrian (and get a great view of the Falls). Most of the hotels on the Canadian side are within a 15 minute walk once you get across, I'd say. :)

 thanks I don't really have high hopes for any Amtrak station, just as long as its not Beaumont it should be okay. I put a few cab company numbers in my cell phone as well. Of course I did this for EMY and the 2 numbers I had turned out to be home phones  Either way I can't spend more then 10 minutes inside which is really bothering me..

The current Amtrak timetable says your train(#284) leaves Niagra Falls, NY at 6:50AM, but if you miss it the Maple Leaf leaves at 12:30PM. Train #281 arrives at 7:35PM. Both trains also stop at the Buffalo-ExchangeSt. station. Don't get off there by mistake. When I rode the Maple Leaf last year the Niagra Falls station didn't look all that bad. But the neighborhood sucks alright. The Canadian side is much better than the US side. Between Buffalo and Niagra and into Canada the train just creeps and crawls and the track is terrible.
