    Adirondack discussion

railiner is indeed correct. This whole system was put into place approximately 20 years ago based on an agreement Amtrak entered into with the border agencies. All staffed ticket offices were required to follow the procedures with the luggage tags and stickers/stamps. The fact that most smaller...

    Sightseer Lounge etiquette

One thing I will defend my former coworkers on is the issue of being open til midnight. Regardless of what the SS manual says, most lounge car jobs are set up, by management, so the attendant is only paid (scheduled to work) until 10 or 11PM.

In terms of arriving earlier, you are only looking at one part of the equation. There are a large number of MBTA commuter trains arriving into Bos during that time frame, so it has to fit into the window that was scheduled amongst the commuter traffic operating between PVD and Bos.

    Northeast Regional discussion

Yes, especially with the first arrival of the day from DC. It had a short turn in NYP. They would either run the engine around or use the Station protect. They also had a set of cleaners who would clean the train and turn the seats in the dark. Later arrivals started going around the SSYD loop...

    Metroliner 9800 in DC

The 9800 did serve as a Cab car when it was first released from the shops. It was rebuilt as a prototype to serve on Metroliners to save from running engines around equipment or wyeing the equipment. Unfortunately, both the quality of work in the cab as well as the lack of popularity of the...

You can always ask, there may or may not be any left on board. They usually exchange entree carts at NYP.

    Tipping on Amtrak

That's great, except the memo is in regards to ticket office and clerical people, not OBS. The OBS people do not have a strong union and they recently voted down their new contract offer because it was so bad....

    Tipping on Amtrak

Incorrect about IRS. All Dining Car crew, except kitchen staff, are considered tipped employees under IRS guidelines, and the appropriate info is reported to them.

    Philadelphia to Washington 12/2/2023

I understood what you meant. I spent MANY years working as a cafe attendant on these trains. People use the seats in the cafe as their seat for their trip. It is allowed on the trains operating between Was and Bos. ETA, as AmtrakBlue mentioned, you just ask the table hogs to move their...
