In Memory of Eric Minton - "GG-1"

I'm sad to hear of his passing. I never had the pleasure of meeting Eric, but enjoyed his posts here on AU. He will be greatly missed, praying for comfort for his family, friends and all those who knew him.

Need advice on traveling from Chicago to Redding California

We just went through the Rockies on the California Zephyr, and it was beautiful. If you want to see the west coast, I would take the Southwest Chief, then connect in L.A. with the Coast Starlight up to Redding. We really like the Coast Starlight route. Then you could either go back by the...

New Baggage Rules:Have they affected you?

I know the 'rules' for baggage changed in October 2015, I was wondering if it has affected anyone, and how? If you are carrying a laptop bag or backpack, are they counting it as a 'personal item' or 'carryon'? What about pillows and blankets? I'm also interested in those of you that go to...

I'm stunned and so sorry to hear this news. I had no idea he was sick. I have not had the pleasure of meeting Patrick, but have enjoyed his humor, knowledge, trip reports, pics and Fez here. He was one of the many that made me feel welcome here, and I truly appreciate it. I will miss...

Amenities Being Eliminated from Long Distance Routes

We just recently booked a flight with Frontier, and paid extra for 'stretch seating', free checked baggage, carryons and includes free beverages and 1 free alcoholic beverage. I think what we need to remember is that Amtrak is similar to a hotel or bed and breakfast on wheels. So comparing...

best ways for Amtrak to cut its operating losses?

I like it! I would sign up for that too. The only question is how often are there unsold Roomettes or Bedrooms anymore? I would assume off peak times, maybe, but since ridership is up, I wonder if any are available at all? Except of course from cancellations.

best ways for Amtrak to cut its operating losses?

Yes, Green Maned Lion, there is..... :P I know we have talked of increasing sleepers/coach cars before, but IF there was enough to add 1 each to the LD Routes both ways, would that help? I for one would like to know if there is enough interest to add more...It seems that if most sleepers...

    Best Pizzas by Train

Thanks Charlie! Can you buy smaller pizzas at Giordano's for 2 people? Any idea on pricing?

best ways for Amtrak to cut its operating losses?

No big deal. Don't have an answer on how to solve the problem. Many suggest cut here or there, but if you do that, you will also lose some riders, defeating the purpose. Some suggest raise the prices, again you will lose riders, because the prices already can be high, especially for sleepers...

best ways for Amtrak to cut its operating losses?

You may want to look at the figures on LD trains for 2012-http://www.amtrak.com/servlet/ContentServer?c=Page&pagename=am%2FLayout&cid=1246041980246 Quote In FY 2012, all 15 long-distance routes saw an increase in riders and combined had the best ridership in 19 years with 4.7 million...

Amenities Being Eliminated from Long Distance Routes

I just looked on amtrak.com, under sleeper amenties and it still lists tolietries, newspaper, etc. The newest Coast Starlight Route Guide still lists the wine tasting, but not on the Empire Builder Guide. It's really too bad they are removing these 'extras', because we did enjoy the 'cheap...

    2 Zone Or 3 Zone?

Dave, I was just teasing. Sara, I'll take that as a compliment. It is quite fancy! I wasn't aware it changed to a script font or I wouldn't have used it. It's also my default font in my email, so if I reply from there it would show up. I'll make sure to use another font it so it's easier for...

    2 Zone Or 3 Zone?

Wow, it looks so pretty in the script! I can imagine on a small screen it would be difficult to read. I did not realize it changed to a script on some devices,, sorry! I didn't mean to create a controversy! (please note I chose 'Georgia' for a font for those who may be struggling with...
