Advice needed: What are the best small town stops on the Amtrak System

I'll have to vote for Charlottesville, VA as well. I grew up there. If you have time to spare this is one of those cities you can just walk around and get lost in the history. It's big enough that you won't run out of stuff to do but small enough you won't feel like you're a grain of sand at the...

    "Lynchburger" Beats Projections

First Off - I'm sorry I've missed out on such an indepth discussion... I've been working my backside off over the holidays. Second, how wonderful is it that ticket sales are through the roof? I'm so hppy to see this. Third, and extension to Roanoke would be awesome but at what cost would it...

    SEPTA On Strike

I don't know all the details, however from what I read, I'm having a hard time understanding what more they could want. They apparently have a federal transportation pension which is a pretty good one. Their starting pay is almost double the US minimum wage somewhere around $14 to $15 an hour...

    Support for expanded Electrification?

I’m going to take a jump and say one it’s not likely any time soon. From everything I’ve read and what others on this forum board have mentioned it’s incredibly cost prohibitive short term. While I don’t think it’s totally impossible, the state of VA or states along said route would have to...

Amtrak Pacific Parlor Car vs. Via Rail Park Car

As a kid (mid to late 80s or even early 90s) I remember dome cars or dome diners on the Auto Train before it was changed to superliner equipment. Does anyone remember this, or am I just not remembering correctly? Anyone know of pics of this? I took a quick look but not luck finding anything...

    Would a Slumbercoach work again?

Would the Slumbercoach work again? I was just comparing the Viewliner Sleepers with the Slumbercoach Sleepers, and the capacity on the Slumbercoach is somewhat higher. Granted the Slumbercoach was before ADA, but even so would something like this work again, a more modernized version perhaps...

Inaugural Lynchburg charter on Wednesday, the full scoop!

This is awesome. I am in hopes that press release was put out to the local media stations so they can get coverage of this for tomorrows 6pm news? It would be some grea publicity!

"Amtrak Virginia" Offically up and running

With Amtrak's lack of being able to purchase new equipment, I'm sure they'll stay longer than that. just my

"Amtrak Virginia" Offically up and running

Not to split hairs... On 2nd look (or 52nd in my case) notice that the "third sleeper" looks awful similar to a heritage diner, not to mention it seems to be missing about half of the windows...? or the fact that following it would be 5 Amcans which would give room to believe that it would be...

Amtrak plays pricing games with Crescent

Agreed. I think this makes sense. If you can make more money by blocking off local passengers to a regional train which travels the same route, which allows passengers traveling a further distance in those seats who will pay more money, I think that speaks for itself. It means more revenue...

    Amtrak + Olympics

These are good questions and points. I guess my first question (since I'm not well versed in Chicago facilities) would be how much more capacity can Chicago's Union Station handle versus what it currently handles? Is there space for additional trains that will be needed or will they have to...

    Amtrak in Roanoke, VA!

Thanks Rafi, these other private cars wouldn't by chance be the ones that operated the Virginia Central Railroad Charters back in the mid 90s would they? It's prob a subject for a whole 'nother thread, but what happened to those? a'ha! Thanks battalion, this is kinda what I was guessing. Any...

"Amtrak Virginia" Offically up and running

Just found this while looking for news on Amtrak in VA. Amtrak Virginia It seems to be a new website in partner ship with the Virginia DOT and Virginia.gov offering a little (and I mean a little) more information along with the same info imported from Amtrak.com. Neat, nice but somehow...

"Limited" Train service again an option?

As always Mr AlanB, you are a huge source of helpful information, thank you. I guess then I should be asking if the price is the same for Acela would it be cost effective with the regualr NER trainsets. Or what if it was even a few dollars less that a multistop trip? I mean if the train takes...

Removing Long Distance Trains North of NYP

Hmm, point, so then will a sold out sleeper say cover the cost of the crew operating for the additional 4 hours or so to and from WAS-NYP?
