    Counting segments on joint/split trains

Yeah, I know, I'm just trying to get everything exact before I go ahead and pull the trigger on the rail pass.

    Counting segments on joint/split trains

Hey! I got it to show 448/449 all the way in/out of CHI now, maybe it was just the dates I was looking at before. So as long as the trip is available on the same train number, then there's no concern about it being more than one segment.

    Counting segments on joint/split trains

Okay, so while you can book the 27 "concurrent" to 7 all the way from Chicago without transfer to PDX, there is no 448 from Chicago to Boston, you must take 48 then "transfer" to 448 in Albany. So it just depends on the way the trains are assigned.

    Counting segments on joint/split trains

How does it work with # of segments for a USA rail pass with trains that join or split, such as EB or LSL? Sometimes these are represented as connections in the online booking, so does that make it two segments?

NCDOT Ride Along the Piedmont Corridor video (Feb, 2016)

Whoa, for a second I thought I might have been in this video ;) From the amount of snow and time of day, this was shot on Piedmont 75 sometime between Jan 24-28, not all at once either as you can tell by snow magically melting at the Cary station, but all within that week. I rode the...

Why such a huge cost discrepancy on LD?

YES! The rail pass would be perfect, I think 8 segments/15 days is exactly what I'm looking at, I could always just pay for the shortest legs, particularly on the beginning and end. Thank you so much for pointing this out.

Why such a huge cost discrepancy on LD?

I suppose I can still justify the increased cost by, it saves me from having to pay for sleeper car the entire way, or maybe even at all, and it'll make the trip much more worthwhile to me to visit friends and family along the way for a few days at a time.

Why such a huge cost discrepancy on LD?

These are all the lowest / Value fares, regardless of what day. So I checked, if I split it up even more... Zephyr end to end, CHI-EMY, is $133. CHI-LNK $66, LNK-DEN $59, DEN-SLC $65, SLC-EMY $79 - $269, or more than double the straight shot. And it goes up from there obv. I appreciate this cost...

Why such a huge cost discrepancy on LD?

So from what I understand, if I want to stop off for a night or three in a town along a LD route by booking one leg the first day then the next for a few days later, the cost goes up dramatically. For example, from NYP-EMY via CHI on 49 & 5, it's $186 on coach as a straight shot, which seems...

2hrs too short for "official" connection?

Oh okay, maybe not then. I just checked today, for instance, although it's a Saturday in February and I'll likely be coming thru on a weekday in May, that the Crescent is still available for 3 hrs from now, for a good price no less. I'll just book the Star and risk it. If that AND the Crescent...

2hrs too short for "official" connection?

Okay, great, so I should feel pretty good about making the Star. Would the safest thing be to go ahead and book both the Star and Crescent, independent of my earlier ride, then cancel whichever one I won't be riding on that day once I know if I'll make it to D.C. in time?

2hrs too short for "official" connection?

Thanks, that clarifies things a lot. My reason for wanting to catch the Star is going to Raleigh/Cary, so the Meteor doesn't help me. I'll just be traveling coach, so it shouldn't be a big deal to switch trains. I can probably make the Crescent to Greensboro work, so that'll be my contingency...

2hrs too short for "official" connection?

In planning a future trip, I want to connect in Washington, D.C. from the 30 Capitol Limited to the 91 Silver Star. The 30 arrives at 1:05p while 91 departs at 3:05p but this is not available as an official connection. I assume this means Amtrak is not confident enough in 30 less than 2 hrs...

Silver Star has new Café menu and no diner

I think removing the dining car from where it's sufficiently needed, such as on the Crescent, is a drastic move that isn't likely. The Silver Star dining car didn't seem that popular while it still had it last year since the overwhelming majority of passengers are not going more than 10-12 hrs...

Silver Star has new Café menu and no diner

I think that's the point to take away from the Star - because it detours from the MIA-NYP route the Meteor takes by 2 hours both for Tampa and in NC & SC, by it's very nature it's geared towards shorter trips, just linking them all together on one line. It seems like the longest anyone would...
