AU Friends take the Tehachapi Detour

Hello. I was on the detoured Starlight on March 25, but in coach and thus in the SSL car. With my travelling group (a ticket clerk from MTZ Amtrak and another Volunteer Station Host at MTZ Amtrak), I did the trip from MTZ and came back up on the first bus to BFD and the #711 the next day. It was...

"IF ONLY I COULD HAVE ONE WISH!"

My wish would be to have Superliners or similar double-decker cars on all long-distance trains, including east coast routes. Kurtis

Cafe/Dining car hogs on the NE Corridor

I think that people should also be allowed to use laptops on those tables, as well. That is, as long as they aren't hogging them for too long or the car isn't full of others. The tray tables either in coach or sleeper simply don't do the job, for me at least.

Across the USA and back by train

It seems pretty expensive last time I checked. It could easily get in the $1,000's for just a 2-3 day trip in sleeper.

    train to nowhere?

Agreed. Before they make such statements, they should try to see for themselves. For example, if someone were to say to me "No one rides trains in Atlanta", I'd tell them "Go to the Amtrak station at 8AM and you will see the station, even if it is small, crowded." Until they are willing to see...

    Fire Inspector Killed by Train

In fact, my local fire station in Atlanta is about 100 feet from an active rail line, so that makes things even more difficult...

    Wolverine Question

That would be the P40s, at least the non-upgraded ones. P42s are rated for a max speed of 110 MPH, as are the P32AC-DMs.

    My Viewliner Bedroom Setup

LOL! Seriously, though. I feel for this guy. I use computers constantly... just not on the train. (Heck, the train is more than fun enough without 'em!) :)

    Amtrak and Ice Dancing

When they said they had it shipped by Amtrak, I KNEW someone would post of it here! To be honest, I wasn't really watching it, I just happened to be sitting with my Mom (who was watching it) at the time. @ Sunchaser: "Amtrak Saves the Day" Couldn't have said it better myself! Added to my...

    Amtrak sleeping room allocation

A "while" is an understatement, my friend. :) In fact, Allan, you'll be seeing the Colorado River for at least 3-5 hours on either side of the train. I swear that it seems the Colorado can not make up it's mind which side of the train to be on....! :P Ahem, I mean that not only do you...

    Busiest/Longest Freight Only Mainlines?

Ahh, I see now. Thanks Bill & Matt. :) I managed to forget you were talking of a CSX not NS line originally. Had I remembered, my message would've been different. Silly me. :P

    Busiest/Longest Freight Only Mainlines?

Does the line to Atlanta via Folkston & Waycross go through Austell? 'Cause when I railfanned Amtrak in Austell, within a matter of 30 minutes of waiting for the Crescent to pass, usually 2-3 freights come by, as well. Kurtis

    Cost of Meals; roomette question

$173 for a roomette is very good, indeed. Especially since, upon looking up the prices on various dates, it would be safe to say that Amtrak is getting a fair amount of business on the route. (High bucket fares left & right, even a number months in the future) Kurtis

    Cost of Meals; roomette question

If I understand you correctly, you're getting a roomette for all 4 party members? (2 roomettes in total, of course) If so, Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner is free in the Dining Car. However, you'll still have to pay for anything you get from the Sightseer Lounge Car. Kurtis

    Increase in Fares!

I too have noticed a slight increase in fares. Up to the last time I checked, the price of a Bedroom between Atlanta & Birmingham (or New Orleans for that matter) was $70 on top of rail fare. Now it is $72. No biggie, though. I might end up going to New Orleans later this year & a mere $2 extra...
