I've been a Kennedy Assassination Buff all my life. This afternoon I got a little schock when I was reading Prouty's history & discovered his connection with Amtrak!!! ( maybe "connection" is the wrong word  !!! )

Who is L. Fletcher Prouty?
I had a choice to fly United from PDX-PVD or to "fly" Amtrak - I chose to "fly" Amtrak!

I don't care where the train is going - as long as I'm on it!

Wherever I go, there I am!

Being normal is vastly overrated

Yowzer!! Didn't expect this name to pop up on this forum!

Prouty was the Amtrak senior PR, among other things during his life, who helped promote then-Amtrak Pres. Alan Boyd's ill-fated attempt in the early 1980s for high speed rail between Los Angeles and San Diego, backed with initial financing by a notorious and rich Japanese WW II war criminal (rehabilitated after the Occupation ended) with ties to the Japan National Railways and its rail equipment company allies. This high-speed rail plan died from both intense environmental opposition from SoCal coastline residents and from skepticism among US investment bankers about ridership figures generated by Arthur D. Little.

Prouty was also an avid Scientologist.

What a bizarre old bird.

Here he wrote a 1989 NYT letter to the editor warning about the dangers of maglev high speed rail. Seems speeds over 180mph are too dangerous, "weather-related problems, foreign object strikes and trash collisions on any ground guideway. Any such collision will not be minor. It will be explosive and a major disaster...". Then to illustrate his point he relates a story about hitting a buzzard in a plane at less than 150mph causing quite a lot of damage, then goes on to recommend that high speed rail be held to 150-180mph top speed.
