Been lurking a bit, first time posting/registering.

I'm 27, live in Buffalo, NY and I'm a huge rail/Amtrak fan.

My Amtrak travel history is a bit light...but I'm working on it. I took one trip as a kid with my parents, I think Buffalo to Rochester. In 04 I went Buffalo (exhange st.) to New York Penn and back on an Empire Service train. Then in May of 06 I took the Lake Shore Limited from Buffalo (depew) to New York Penn and back.

Looking forward to adding to the boards.

Welcome Mike.

Hi, Mike. I joined after you...but we are just a few miles apart along the same LD LSL line... Are you aware of N.A.R.P.'s gathering folks along various LD lines to promote them? Is everyone aware of this? (Though I am frustrated that it seems like this is more of a good idea than something that will ever get off the ground...I signed up in Nov 06...still no real movement or connecting of folks that I am aware of...)

How much snow do you have up there in Buffalo proper? I have been seeing that it seems to be the worst between Erie and Buffalo?

I was not aware of the NARP quest to gather folks. Is there a website?

Yea, the city proper usually gets off pretty easy, but we do get hammered sometimes. Lake Erie snow "events" are probably 80% southern burbs/rual/ski country and 20% city. However, when it does setup over the city, its usally very heavy as southwest winds (bring it into the city) travel over the full fetch of the lake and produce the most intense bands of snow.

If you have any info you can share of the NARP, please let me know.

We are sort of having a snow event here right now! City Schools closed here for the first time in a couple of years...my kids are pretty pumped about that!

Regarding NARP, their website is www.narprail.org You will find a link from that homepage to this http://www.narprail.org/cms/index.php/reso...re/route_teams/ if it works. I was expecting to hear yesterday from them with email addresses of those along the LSL that want to collaborate to promote the route. If you are interested, sign up via the web link.

Take care, Mike. Enjoy the Lake Effect...sounds like we may get a taste of it tomorrow through Sat. once this Southern storm passes... I love winter, I love winter, I love winter...

I spent some time browsing through the NARP site and was frankly appalled that some of the information there was way outdated and wrong:

» Amtrak Service Changes From Hurricanes Katrina

The Sunset Limited, City of New Orleans, and Crescent all face long-term service disruptions due to the devastation from Hurricane Katrina.

Long-term service disruptions due to Hurricane Katrina

The Crescent and City of New Orleans have resumed full operations into New Orleans (effective October 9). Amtrak is cautioning patrons that public transportation, including taxis, is non-existent and that curfews are in effect in the city and surrounding Parishes.

The Sunset Limited continues to terminate in San Antonio; an announcement about its operation will come later.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sunset hasn't been truncated at San Antonio for a very long time now.

I sent NARP a feedback email pointing out the error. This is not what I would have expected from what purports to be the primary association of rail passengers in the U.S.

Railbender: I'll check it out later tonight and probably join.

AmtrakWPK: I agree. Not good to see such outdated info.
