Whatever siding I'm sitting on!
I just had to modify a ticket to board the same train, but 2 stops later.

Unless I was lucky, I received an e-voucher for the FULL amount of the difference!

There was no cancellation penalty!

How does it work using AGR Pts.?

You just get the points back.

If canceling An AGR res, do you get any penalty?
And here I thought my 71 year old memory was fading fast....I thought I recalled a previous conversation on the same thread, but in the AGR forum.

In my best Ed McMahn voice: "EVERYTHING YOU EVER WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT CANCELLATIONS...'

Was that 10% on the difference only, or on the entire amount?

If on the difference, that would be correct. But if it was on the entire amount, it is not. The agent cancelled the reservation and then rebooked it. If this happens, ask for a supervisor.

I have one voucher left, which I am going to cash in to get a train ticket. I'll be using the whole amount....will they charge me a penalty for cashing in the voucher? (I've had it since before they came up with the new rules.)

It's probably the last voucher I will get. If they are going to charge me for changing my mind, I will have to know where I am going from the beginning and just stick to it!

So you're just booking a totally new ticket with a voucher? If that's the case, I don't see any reason whatsoever why there would be any penalty.

The eVoucher is just like cash. No penalty for using the voucher or credit. If there's a penalty to be applied, it occurs when the existing reservation is cancelled or changed, not when using whatever's left to buy a new ticket.

That's what I'm saying. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't misunderstanding the question.

I was charged a points restocking fee of 10% for modifying a reservation by one day to a lower price.
I don't think a different booking on a different day is a modification. If the travel date had not been changed but the fare had simply dropped, then I think it qualifies as a modification. Matter of fact I know because I've done it a time or two.

But by changing the travel date your initial booking had to be cancelled in order to free up whatever you had booked on that train. Because of that alone methinks the 10% restocking fee was legitimate.

It is. Amtrak has a such of loose policy about what counts as a "modification". I've found that if the departure station or destination stay roughly the same, they won't charge you a fee. For example, at one point I was considering changing my (then) upcoming trip on the TE and LSL from Pomona to New York, via Chicago. I asked multiple agents and they told me there would be no change fee, even if I went with the Southwest Chief and Cardinal, which would be a day later and out of Los Angeles instead of Pomona. And it was the same story when I asked what about changing to the Sunset Limited and Crescent via New Orleans.

So I would say that virtually anything can count as a "modification".

Thanks for the answers to my question on cashing in a voucher. I just wanted to be sure, so that if anyone tries to charge a penalty, I will know that is wrong and will tell them.
