I saw two VRE trains this morning at ALX, both headed to DC. On both, the engine was on the rear, and the lead car had stripes (similar to the Metroliner cars on the Keystone).

Are these push/pull trains? Also, why those type of stripes?

Thanks :).

Yes, they're push pull.

Stripes for visibility.

I see VRE almost every morning going over the Potomac on the Long Bridge. Push into DC and loco leads out of DC. I’ve seen as many as eight cars with one locomotive (sometimes two locomotives). The locomotive at the Virginia end is supposed to reduce fumes in Washington Union Station. MARC does the same thing with the locomotive on the Maryland end. They also push into DC.
