Maybe 8/10 years ago we had a pleasant, if slow, trip on the Vermonter from St. Albans to NYP. We will be traveling to VT in August and are considering taking the VT again (Port Kent option appears too difficult with schedule changes). My question, is the consist still the same as it was then: a 2/1 BC car on the rear of the train (although we reversed directions at Palmer Jct, which is no longer necessary).

The other option is to take the Ethan Alllen to Rutland and have our friends pick us up there. That is appealing because of the NYG departure but the 2 hours drive to Lake Champlain would probably not be appreciated by our friends. Is the BC on this train also a 2/1 car on the rear?

Im not sure, but I think the EA has BC at the end and I think 2x1. (I take the EA often but always in coach.)
The EAE runs with a split car normally, but if memory serves Thirdrail7 said something about some of the split cars being removed from the Empire trains for Summer of Hell. No idea about the Vermonter.

I took the Ethan Allen a few weeks ago in BC and it was the split 2x1 car. Quite comfortable, but I'm not sure if it's changing with the summer schedule change
It is changing. No business class on all of the Grand Central trains this summer, since the split-clubs can't run push-pull.

I don't know of any that aren't, using the OTOL Roster as a resource, it shows the 5 that were not originally now renumbered in the column of the 44 that are. They aren't foolproof, but are generally pretty close.
