Amtrak has an absolutely laughable routing to go from New Orleans to Galveston including a 19 hour ride on the City of N.O. to Chicago, almost an equally long ride back on the Eagle to Longview followed by a 6 hour bus ride to Galvestion.

On the other hand going west to east, you go into Houston on the SL then catch a bus that meets the train and takes 1 1/2 hours.

We were coming back from El Paso to NOL and, having arrived an hour early in Houston, I walked around for a while then casually asked the agent why no bus from Houston to Galveston for westbounders. She said she didn't know but suggested just staying overnight in downtown Houston then catching the bus the next day. Wow! I never thought of that! I asked her if one could ticket that and she said it was okay. I could stay overnight in Houston, see some sights in the AM then catch the Ambus at 1:30PM. I love the idea.

I wonder if online agents would be able to book something like that! Overnight stay between train and bus.

Thoughts?

The computer isn't always right. I recall in the '80s the airlines wanted me to fly from New Orleans to NYC then to Charlotte Amalie. Only the travel agent knew that it was much quicker and cheaper to fly to Miami, then San Juan, then catch a local shuttle to Charlotte Amalie.

I just saw an airline routing of SJC-SAN-SFO-PHL. Now, if I'm close enough to SJC, why wouldn't I just go to SFO to catch the plane.
