Anyone know why the Southwest Chief that left Chicago on Sat. 3-10-18 was numbered as Train 1003 instead of Train 3? Noticed it on the monitors in Union Station and it's also that way on the Amtrak Status Map.
 
It is because of daylights savings time. 3(10) was renumbered 1003 to avoid having two trains numbered (3) arriving KNG on the same date. They've done it before.

Indeed, they do to quite a bit when schedule changes occur,. An example is the notorious 1092 vs 92 when they move up 92's departure 4 hours to avoid track work.
 
Makes sense. I wondered if that might be the case, but noticed the other long distance trains were still numbered as usual. Thanks for the explanation.
 
Keep in mind Arizona doesnt observe DST, so trains serving that state have different scheduled times during daylight and standard time. Since other LDs dont have to deal with that oddity (except the Sunset Limited, whose less-than-daily schedule takes care of it instead) theres no worry about two trains being scheduled at the same station on the same date during the transition.
