Some train stations with extra attractions:  http://www.bbc.co.uk...gland-42085145

Do some smaller Amtrak stations have any interesting or unexpected items of interest nearby?

Depends on what is interesting.

Galesburg has a nice little railway museum that is open only in the summer.

Elkhart also has a nice railway museum across the tracks from it, within walking distance across a grade crossing.

Many stations have plinthed steam locos and/or caboose.

I am sure there are many other things of interest by stations. Those are the ones that immediately come to mind.

The Santa Fe Rail Museum @ the Temple,Texas Station (ex AT&SF) is definitely worth a visit.

I was thinking more of some non rail related attractions that would surprise the casual visitor who stepped out of a local station? I guess quirky or re-purposed might be the words... :D
