Is this heaven? No. It's Iowa.
In anticipation of that question in a few months I checked AU member Agent's YouTube videos and saw that May 26 was the date this year that the consist was back to having the coach cars in front of the sleeper cars.

So look for the end of the winter consist about the same time in 2018.

That's good information but can you also predict the two to four weeks the Zephyr will detour through Wyoming due to Colorado track work? I considered booking a Zephyr trip in June but decided not to since that is the month I got routed through Wyoming in 2015.

No, because that isn't up to Amtrak, it's up to Union Pacific.

I would love to get rerouted through Wyoming between SLC and DEN.

Even better would be 4 hours late starting on the Wyoming detour westbound, and 3 hours or so late eastbound.

I couldn't get away for the most recent Wyoming detour.

Book the date you want. If route changes you should be able to get an alternate date that is not a re route . At same cost with no additional fare ?

I don't think Amtrak's COC provides free rescheduling for origins or destinations that are outside of the reroute zone. They might waive a cancellation fee but I wouldn't count on them to manually force a same-cost change to another day if the new date has a higher bucket price. I'd say TT is right to be wary.

Amtrak will tout the opportunity to see a different route rarely seen by passenger rail, thus trying to avoid numerous changing of tickets, and justifying to them why the change isn't necessary..

Perhaps Amtrak would also arrange for special buses to take passengers to all stops from Denver to Grand Junction on days that the CZ is rerouted via Wyoming.

Amtrak did exactly that for my Brother-in-Law. He had purchased a ticket from Grand Junction to Chicago before the UPRR decided to reroute thru Wyoming. He and about twenty others left the Grand Junction Depot at the scheduled departure time for #6. The bus arrived in Denver, where he boarded the train for Chicago. He did have to kill some time in Denver, the bus arrived earlier than #6 would have on its normal schedule.

when are these reroutes more common ? I will be travelling from grand junction to denver during christmas week and i really want to travel via the rockies.

The track work reroutes are usually in warm Spring or Summer months so December is not a problem. Only December concern is the reduction in number of coach and sleeper cars limiting available booking space.
