Did you notice the “test” seat from 1973 had an armrest between the seats?

Did you check out the picture of the lounge observation car that had a piano in it? Looking at these pictures only shows how much the quality of passenger rail travel has fallen over the past 50 years. When passenger rail was the main form of transportation there was loads of competition and each railroad tried to outdo the other. The result were some pretty interesting car designs including a "Recreation Car" on the PRR Broadway Ltd. That car had game tables, beverage service,a small movie theater room and even a nursery with a baby sitter.

The seats have slowly evolved to look more and more like something out of the landmark Stanley Kubrick creation 2001 Space Odyssey.

Acelas already have doors that open like in Star Trek with an approximation of the same swishing noise too. So why not

It is interesting how tastes change thru the years....

When Amtrak got around to refurbishing their inherited heritage fleet, they were trying hard to convey the image that they were modern and fashionable, by replacing the staid pastel original colors, with the garish, 'psychedelic' purples, oranges, and red interiors....they apparently took a page out of the book of the successful Auto Train Corporation....

This lasted until the conversion to Head End Power, when a much more conservative 'earth-tone' interior replaced those...
