I'm a ham radio operator and planning on taking my tri-band handheld along tomorrow on the Cardinal to CVS. My radio allows also to scan the AAR band. Typically what AAR channels should I be paying attention to?

Not sure, but IIRC, at one time the NYP to WAS was 160.92 MHZ...I dont recall the AAR channel number for that...possibly 54?

What's typically heard on the channels? The one time I was on the NEC with my radio, I don't remember hearing anything, I know they wouldn't call signals.

Do they call signals on the NEC? Even in 261-CSS territory, I would think that the cab signals would provide enough redundancy for the safety factor you get from calling signals.

Certain trains on the NEC must call any clearly visible fixed signal when departing a passenger station. Although it is rare, push pull trains without cab signals must call certain wayside signals.

A lot of the radio traffic on the NEC subsided once the conductors received their cell phone/scanners.

Usually just the engineer calling signals and the conductor acknowledging. Less frequently, the dispatcher.
Not on the NEC. As Thirdrail says above, except in unusual circumstances no signal calling at all.
