Anyone know what happened to the Sunset Limited today in Palm Springs. Now 4+ hours late. We are planning on catching this train in ELP this PM and want to get a sense of how late it is going to be.

Garsh that is an optimistic timetable for a train that is run without regard to lateness. Although its a good idea to at the station earlier than it is later.

After extensive discussions with the agent at the ELP Amtrak station (nice building BTW) this afternoon, we decided to cancel the trip and drive to San Antonio. The SL is now over 8 hours behind and at last glance still in AZ! Amtrak now has taken even an estimate of its arrival in ELP off the schedule. We are staying in Stockton overnight and will get to San Antonio reasonably refreshed Sunday midday. Frustrating, for I really wanted to enjoy the ride on the TE/SL this afternoon and tonight.

Oh, well. This is the first bad experience on Amtrak since a couple of mega delayed Empire Builder's during the Bakken problems on the Hi-Line several years ago.

:-(

Whatever happened, it was between Palm Springs and Yuma. I feel badly for the passengers on their way to New Orleans. Does anyone have any idea of what happened?

According the folks in El Paso a drunk driver rammed thru a barricade and hit the second locomotive, causing significant damage to that unit and the initial 7+ hour delay. Somehow the drunk and his passenger (supposedly also drunk) survived.

Meanwhile we arrived in San Antonio about 90 minutes ahead of the train, and that was after a good night's rest in Ft. Stockton, TX. Sorry to see the problems for the train like this.

Looks like today's westbound SSL (#1) got off to a very late start after the eastbound train arrived in NOL almost 10 hours behind yesterday. Bummer. At least today's #2 is on schedule!
