We booked a round trip to Omaha for 2018. Points going and cash returning. The cash segments were OMA-CHI, (BR) CHI-WAS, (BR) WAS-PHL.(NER BC)  When we booked our tickets the train connections showed CZ, CL and NER business only. As a select member I have several free class upgrade coupons. Was going to book the NER segment coach and use the upgrade coupon but it didn't. show up on the trip options. Anyone know why?  Is there a way to change this without upsetting the fare on the entire return trip?

The upgrade coupons can only be applied within 12 hours of departure by telephone.(unless changed recently) The fare should remain the same if coach, but if coach is sold out you will have a problem getting a refund as the coupon has no cash value .You will be upgrading an existing reservation , not rebooking it.

This has never been the case. You can call go to a ticket office, clubacela lounge and upgrade your reservation within 12 hours of the trip. I don't know where you heard that it's only by phone.

I think and I use the word THINK seriously that you can only book BC when you book a room on the cap. If I get a chance I'll play around with Amtrak.com to see if that's the case.

You interpreted my grammar mistake to your usage  rather than my intended meaning. I could apologize

for the missing "or" if that makes you feel better. 

 I was just giving an option to the poster which is the easiest way to upgrade,

You should be able to change the class of fare on the Amtrak website to coach for that segment, the same way you'd change from roomette to bedroom on a LD train. There should be the same little arrows to change it - I've done it when playing around with fares on trains with some daytime-only segments (I only really want sleeper for overnight.)
