I haven't taken a trip in about  2 years. It used to be the sleeper prices included more than 1 person. I take it that has changed?

Now you have to pay the Coach fare for the second person.

Someone more familar with AGR can verify if this is allowed, but I would think it is.

Have your friend (or you) buy an "Open Sleeper" ticket (it's just the cost of the coach fare, but you aren't allotted a seat) they can then join you in your sleeper.

For the past number of years, a sleeper fare has been base accomodation for the room + rail fare for each person in said room (typically equivalent to low bucket coach.) However, AGR 1.0 would allow a sleeper redemption for up to the standard number of people in the room at no additional point cost. With AGR 2.0 and the points redemptions roughly following the cash cost, the additional rail fare is charged (in points) for additional people in the room.

(It's also worth noting that the rail fare is priced the same as the lowest "Value" fare bucket; this used to be the cheapest bucket on long distance trains, but with the prevalence of Saver fares now on long distance trains it's not uncommon for rail fare to be higher than the cheapest coach fare.)

It used to be the sleeper prices included more than 1 person.

AFAIK, the total cost of a sleeper ticket has always been (in recent years, at least) a single sleeper upcharge plus a low bucket coach fare for each adult sleeper occupant.  And the sleeper upcharge is independent of the number of people in that sleeper.  I may be mistaken, but I don't think the second sleeper occupant ever rode for free.

They did with AGR 1.0 awards, those were good up to the recommended capacity of the room.  Otherwise , no.  Rail fares for as many were in the room plus accommodation charge.

The "coach" fare in a sleeper reservation (for either person) is a small part of the overall cost...you might look at what the additional would be...perhaps not prohibitive.

The "accommodation" fare (the sleeper portion) will cover up to two people for a roomette or bedroom and does not vary with the number of people as does the coach fare.

So, you're saying that 1 person in a roomette = accommodation fare + coach fare & 2 people in a roomette = accommodation fare + 2 coach fares?

That's because with one person, you're paying only one rail fare. You have to pay for a second rail fare if a second person goes along - the price will jump, but it won't double.

I just did a sample and for 1 person the bedroom was 1369.

Below is for 2 people.  1521-1369 = 152.  152x2 = 304

2 Reserved Coach Seats  $666.00

Viewliner Bedroom  $1521.00

Pretty much. It's low bucket coach, so in high season the difference may be less than the going coach fare.

Gotcha, but I still prefer it the old way,LOL!!!

To be fair, the old way was only when redeeming AGR points; the current structure has always* applied for cash passengers, it's just now also in effect for AGR redemptions.

*as long as I'm aware of, which to be fair is maybe 10 years or so.

Single coach fare $152

Bedroom Accomodation Fee  $1217

If just one person in the room, then it's 1217 + 152 = 1349

If there's 2 people in the room, it's 1217 + 152 + 152 =1521

This is the old way. Individual rail fares and a separate single charge for the accommodation has been the way it's been done since long before Amtrak was formed. Then Amtrak continued using the method through its entire history.

My first ride on Amtrak was 5/1/1971, the day they took over.

There has been no significant change in the methodology of rail fare plus accommodation charge.
