My only serious annoyance is that I have to go down to NYC to come back up from NYC and then am taken back to NYC before I can go back up from NYC.

"Oy." I'd love a drop-off in Albany or Schenectady.

I raise the question: do I want to look out at the Hudson or at the land while on the West Shore Line? If I'm looking for Points Of Railroad Interest, that is. I've seen the Hudson before. Opinions?

Agree with Jeb that those of us in flyover country are better off using the $$$ it would take to get to and stay in NYC to ride on a Classic RR or take an Amtrak trip on a scheduled Train.

Otherwise it sounds like fun if you are close to the Apple, or are Rich!😄

We will be in ABQ for Balloonfest and northern New Mexico on that weekend celebrating our anniversary. I think riding the Cumbres & Toltec will be just as scenic,, :).

C&TS is especially nice on the morning northbound leg from Chama, NM to the luncheon stopping point.

I'll be on a street car trip here in Philly on the 15th. I had thought of going up to NY state on the 14th but it's not worth it for me.

The excursion itself is reasonably priced, but two nights in New York City adds a lot.

There is no mention of mileage on Amtrak's site. Boarding is at 8:00 AM and returning to NYP at 6:10 PM. Ten hours is quite a long ride. Does anyone know how long this trip is? I guess about 250 miles.

And my other question: Are there any stops along the route? Or is it just NYP to NYP?

Amtrak Routes Traveled: Lake Shore Limited, California Zephyr, San Joaquin, Pacific Surfliner, Coast Starlight, Empire Builder, Cardinal, Crescent, Sunset Limited, Southwest Chief, Hiawatha, City of New Orleans, Texas Eagle, Heartland Flyer, Missouri River Runner, Lincoln, Wolverine, Northeast Regional, Acela Express, Downeaster, Vermonter, Silver Star, Silver Meteor, Capitol Limited, Pennsylvanian, Amtrak Cascades.

Other Routes in North America: Denali Star (Alaska Railroad), The Ocean (Halifax, NS-Montréal, QC), Corridor Montréal-Toronto, The Canadian (Toronto, ON-Vancouver, BC).

Amtrak: approx. 25,000 miles and 47 states.

VIA Rail Canada: approx. 4,300 miles and eight provinces.

As usual, the web site came up not working for AXP at 10:01 am, but I could get the ticket through the Amtrak App on my iPhone. :)

So I am all set for the 14th!

The Amtrak web site home page (desktop/laptop) came up as a blank page, but is working on the app (The AXP designation still shows as Harrisburg from last year)

I decided to go and am ticketed for Saturday. I used the iOS (iPhone) app.

I actually managed to get around the "blank page" issue and get to https://tickets.amtrak.com, and found that it does not recognize AXP as a valid destination. So I reverted to the iOS App, recalling the experience from last year, and was able to get the ticket immediately using it.

Obnoxiously, they failed to update the website.  Called in and got reservations over the phone.  I'll be on *both* trains -- I'm hoping to get the left side on one train and the right side on the other, since this is exceptionally interesting mileage to me.  (I'm even interested in the part going through industrial New Jersey.)

I'll see you guys on the Sunday trip. I'm riding with two friends. Chances are I'll fly to New York and take the silver star home. I'll be looking forward to seeing you guys.

This trip starts my season of almost never being home. I'll go home for two days then drive up to new River. Be there for two weeks followed hopefully by a week in Chicago. Then I'm home till the week before Christmas.

Since I am riding on Saturday, I don't think we'll meet. Sunday I am in Bound Brook at the NJ-ARP Annual Meeting, and then flying back almost immediately after that. Got to work on Monday to earn my keep ;)

I am flying out Friday after work and staying at the Newark Penn Station Hilton. Saturday bright and early catching an NJT into Penn Station NY, even though there is a pickup stop at Newark Penn. Gotta get that good seat you know? :)

I might see you still as I am coming into the city probably that morning. So I should be waving to you guys from under the George Washington bridge.
