Hi All:

My son and I are taking the LSL from ROC to Penn Station next month, to start off on a bike trip down the coast. By any chance does anyone know of a hotel near the station that's OK with bringing in bikes? I've called a couple, and none were particularly enthusiastic about it, but I figured I'd try here as well.

Thanks!
- Rich

I stayed in the Pennsylvania Hotel just opposite the station, a few years back. I remember that they had a huge luggage storage area in their basement, which might be a possibility for your bikes?

A couple of comments...

- Hotel staff is never enthusiastic about bicycles, but I've never had a problem in the end. I just roll up to the front desk with my bike. About half the time they ignore it. The other half, they say something like, "I don't know about the bike..." or "we can store that in the...". My response is always "I'm bringing it in the room with me". If they push back – "well, the room is kinda small" – my response is always "Don't worry, I'll manage. If there's a problem, I'll be happy to sleep in the storage closet, but the bike is going in the room". That's always ended it so far. On my recent trip to Europe, I even brought it into the very small cabin I had on a moored riverboat. Just be sure that you can handle your bike yourself – if you need help getting around the hotel with it, i.e. in and out of elevators or up stairs, you'll have a problem.

- Hotel staff lie a lot, particularly on the phone. They will give you the answer that is most convenient for them, which is usually the answer that will get rid of you the fastest. It's an endemic problem in the travel industry – e.g. Amtrak on board staff making up rules as they go – but it's particularly bad with hotel people.

This chain smaller hotels in Manhattan always comes up on lists of hotels that are bike friendly, and they have a couple of mid-town locations.

I would call them DIRECT for more details,I say direct as opposed to Kyack, TripAdvisor, etc.

It would surprise me that any hotel would have a problem with a bike. With the obvious exceptions, like you aren't riding around the halls, and the bike isn't dripping grease or mud. I mean, it isn't really anything other than a large piece of wheeled luggage, or a funny looking wheel chair.

Check this hotel out: The Homewood Suites by Hilton Times Square-South. It is on W. 37th St. just 3 blocks from NYP. I've stayed there before when taking Amtrak to visit my cousin. It's an extended-stay hotel; they should be able to accommodate bicycles. Just call and ask. The number is 212-244-0644. Very comfortable rooms with kitchenettes plus a complimentary breakfast!
