Conductor told us that the PPC AC is failing just after a couple hours, out of LA on the 5th and after Seattle tried again to fix it for the 6th. Said this car's AC unit is a major problem, so after several failures LA will have to take it out of service. No idea what will be or if something will replace this PPC for the LA (9) departure. The heat is so bad, the Conductor told the PPC attendant to stay out of the car for the rest of the trip, and no passengers are allowed except to walk through.

Perhaps they should pull them earlier for "extended maintenance" to increase reliability! :help:

Perhaps they should have done extended maintenance while they were parked for three months last winter.

This is what I was alluding to. Quite clearly, three months isn't enough time for the "extended maintenance" they professed to have performed.

It may be after the overhaul the HVAC was found to be OK. Then who knows ? After a relative had a home HVAC completely fail 6 months after installation. Stuff happens.

Guess it's time to retire the PPCs then. Save money and avoid the disappointment of them not being in consists.

I'm on the 11 (11) this Tuesday from Klamath Falls, and on the 14 (17) from Los Angeles (both in sleepers), wonder if either will have a bad-ordered PPC or a lounge sub. Fingers crossed. And how does the lounge sub work, if I am unlucky enough to have one?

As much as I hate to say this, as many PPC seat hoggers that I have encountered, I'm wondering if a CS with no PPC might decrease frustration? I know   , but it does **** me off!!!!!

If the PPC on 11(07) is being bad-ordered, and there are 4 PPCs in the fleet and 4 CS consists, then expect a replacement Superliner Lounge on 11(11), 11(15), 11(19), and every 4 days thereafter until the car is repaired

And as for the 14? Double jeopardy, I'm guessing.

It may be that "overhaul" simply doesn't mean what most passengers would assume it means. For instance, Amtrak overhauls apparently do not include replacing or reengineering poorly functioning sewage pumps/pipes/valves in Superliner coaches and sleepers that travel through higher elevations. Once I learned that problems as severe human waste leaking out onto the floor are simply mopped up and sent back out into revenue service I started to understand why Amtrak's equipment often fails in ways you wouldn't normally expect.

You will likely be out of luck on both trips, as the consist starts it's return trip two days after the trip south begins. Therefore, 14 (13), 14 (17), and 14 (21) will likely lack a PPC.

Okay, it is safe to bet that both of my trip, I should not expect a PPC. What should I expect of the sub lounge, then?

Whew! 14(14) here!

The substitute for a bad-ordered PPC will likely by a standard SSL, but with its food and beverage service (and wine and cheese events) adjusted to match what would be offered in the PPC. But no movie theater downstairs and no plush sofas and swivel chairs upstairs.

Can't say whether Amtrak crews will have a WiFi router operating in the substitute SSL like what sometimes works in the PPCs.

My wife sitting in the substitute car for the PPC. They did offer some of the alternative menu items and a few specialty drinks. No breakfast buffet. Some items were not stocked. The attendant said a cross country cafe car would be a better substitute. The car didn't get crowded and was still a nice alternative to the SSL.

Ugh, it's looking like I'll have the substitute for the PPC as well, since I'll be boarding 11 in Davis on the 16th. So they are only offering some of the alternative menu items? I hope the lamb shank is still on the menu...

My CS leg last year had a SSL instead of a PPC as well, so I guess I'm just bad luck.

The first time I took the CS 8 years ago there was a CCC as a substitute for the Parlour Car. It was a good alternative though I was disappointed there was no Parlour Car.

As one who has a CCC as the Diner on my Home Train ( the Eagle) and often had them substituted for the Sightseer Lounge, I assure you that the Sightseer Lounge makes for much better Sightseeing, but the CCC is better for Food and Beverage service since its basically a converted Diner.

At least The "Mafia" seats, are gone from the CCCs!

But still, there's no denying there's nothing like a PPC unless you're riding in a PV or on the Candaian!
