I found this article while searching for public information regarding a derailment around Richmond. I wasn't aware of this proposal. it would close a 98 mile service gap between PTB(VA) and RMT(NC).

Amtrak station possibly coming to Weldon

The proposal has already undergone scrutiny from the local rural planning organization, which gave its blessing last week. Before that, the Weldon and Halifax County Commissioners passed resolutions in support of the plans. So now the proposal is in Raleigh for NCDOT to evaluate.

Allan Paul, NCDOT’s Rail Division deputy director, said the local organizations and elected boards have created a good effort.

“If it scores high enough, we would then proceed with a more detailed cost analysis and engineering studies to establish what the cost would be, and then it’s matter of the project competing for funding to actually construct,” Paul said.
NCDOT will announce the results of the scoring process this fall, Paul said. But he emphasized nothing is definite and that the project would be a multi-year process.

The condition of the rail tracks is also a factor, but CSX, which owns the rail lines, may bring about improvements.

I think this is a good idea; it is the longest gap between stations on the entire east coast between Brunswick (ME) and Miami. The only gap that is even close is between Jesup and Jacksonville. This area has two day trains so it may not be necessary to add a stop to the SS or SM.

That is a good idea.

However, CSX usually really hates adding new stations. Expect them to demand two station sidings and two station platforms. Which will probably make it too expensive for these small towns.

The active tracks near the Weldon Memorial Library are *elevated*, which makes the whole thing even more complicated and expensive.

If possible they should cooperate with CSX on the rumored "new crossing of the Roanoke River" to build station platforms and sidings directly into those plans. If it's built afterwards it's going to be a pain. Bet they don't manage to raise the funds soon enough to integrate it.
