Well its that time again. Time to dust off the passport and travel somewhere around the world. This year, we decided to do a Northern Europe and Russia Cruise on the Regal Princess. We took a charter train In Germany to Berlin and the Sapsan Train from St Petersburg to Moscow and back. I'm in the middle of still editing videos and writing reports so I'll update as soon as I get them up to YouTube.

Very cool! I have been dying to do a fjord cruise in Norway. Probably on a small ferry ship.

Gosh, I would love to travel in business class, to judge by your video! Somehow my flights in economy just don't match up!

(My recent return flight from Boston to Manchester did not even have any entertaiment screens, so we were offered one free drink as compensation. Economy indeed!)

Looking forward to the next instalments!

Part 4: Copenhagen Day 1

Breakfast at Executive Lounge Copenhagen Marriott. The Pickled Herring with curry mayo really started to grow on me. The food spread for breakfast was substantial with both cold and hot dishes and many varieties of bread and pastries.

We took the Hop On Hop Off Bus "Mermaid Tour" which has a stop at the Marriott. The company even has a representative in the lobby selling tickets and answering questions. Once we arrived at the statue, the whole bus disembarked to see the statue. Very crowded and one week after we visited, some nut job threw red paint on her to protest whaling in the Faroe Islands. She has been the victim of countless vandals over the years, but tourists keep flocking to her for a picture.

After a stop at Amalienborg Palace to see where the Queen and her family lives, we decided to head for lunch. The original restaurant that we were going to eat at was closed so on our walk back to Nyhavn, we discovered Restaurant M. After consulting with the group, we decided to try the restaurant out.

After lunch, we continued our walk to Nyhavn to burn off the calories but also to experience the historic district of Copenhagen. Except for the little mermaid, I think pictures of Nyhavn is the second most popular image associated with Copenhagen. After taking a stroll the full length of Nyhvn and back, we decided to take the Hop On Hop Off Canal boat tour which is included in the ticket be bought in the morning. The boat also has a stop at the Marriott so it was both a way to see the sights of the canal and transportation back to the hotel. Our boat driver must have been new. He had difficulty turning the canal boat around in the Nyhavn canal and also missed a stop on the route because he could not dock the boat after multiple tries and a traffic jam of other boats trying to pass.

Restaurant M specializes in Danish Smorrebrod and other traditional Danish food. When we arrived, the gentleman who I think was the owner, sat us immediately at one of the last free four tops in the restaurant. Shortly after we were seated, a group of fellow American's came in and they were turned away due to reservations and lack of anymore upcoming slots during lunch. My dad ordered something more familiar since he isn't really into food that are too exotic from what he eats, but I chose the Smorrebrod Platter which came with a variety of traditional sandwich toppings. Again, the herring was good! I thought I would detest it when I first tried it at breakfast this morning, but the thing as quickly grown on me. The roast port was spectacular as well. Its too bad in the US its hard to find REAL traditional German/Danish roast pork. Its all about the fat and crispy skin!

After resting for a bit up in our room, it was time for the evening snack at the Executive Lounge. While it was called a "snack" the buffet setup was extensive with both cold salads, cheese and two hot dishes. Beer and wine were self service and free during the snack service.

Even after the substantial evening snack, we decided to go out for dinner. I found a restaurant that had high ratings and was also open and only a short walk from the hotel. Restaurant Karla specializes in traditional Danish Food which was exactly what we were looking for. When we arrived at the restaurant, we were asked if we had a reservation. When I said no, the waiter looked at his papers and said that he could get us a table in about an hour. We agreed with the time and decided to stroll around to kill the time. What we discovered while strolling around was that pretty much everything that we saw during the bus tour today was only a short distance walk from the Marriott. What seemed like a long distance due to the round about route of the tour, turned out to be all about half a mile to only a mile away from our hotel.

We arrived back at restaurant Karla at the agreed upon time and our table was ready. I looked over the menu and ordered the hamburger steak for my dad, the veal cutlet for my mom and grandmother to share, and the roast pork for myself. We all shared a little bit of everything between us, but the roast pork was the big hit. There was a big party going on downstairs which also ordered the roast pork. I saw what must have been at least 24 party sized platter for roast pork coming out of the kitchen and going downstairs to the event. Every order comes with a big bowl of brown gravy which according to the waiter can be up on anything once wants.

After the big meal, we decided to take the round about way back to the hotel to burn off some of the calories and also to visit Copenhagen Central Station. As a rail fan it would be a total taboo to not visit a grand station such as Copenhagen Central.

:) I try to write faster, but I learned quickly how much time and effort it takes to sort through pictures and edit videos. I have to try and fit them all in around work.

Nice write up, I visited Copenhagen myself a few years back on a City Night Line train from Amsterdam, and remember the station.

From your food and indeed the whole style of your trip, I realize there is a whole other world out there, on a somewhat elevated comfort level !

Thanks again for the report and the pics.
